“2025 Apprenticeship Contest”

I would also like to thank our apprentice, Nathan Habberfield for stepping up and being a part of this contest. He worked hard for two solid days competing against 15 other apprentices. This is something to be remembered.

We would also like to thank Local 104 for hosting this event. It was a great experience. The Livermore JATC is a state of the art training center, it was a pleasure to attend.

This was truly an amazing opportunity, experience, and honor to be able to attend an even like this. It is a great way for the Kern JATC to be represented.

If the fires have impacted a member of your Union

Urgent LA Fed Message: CA Wildfire Resources

January 9, 2025

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Over the last 24 hours, communities throughout Los Angeles County have been devastated by massive fires that have burned tens of thousands of acres, destroyed over 1,000 buildings, and killed five individuals. As the fires continue and families face many challenges, Labor Community Services (LCS) is ready to support and assist those in need during these historic fires in Southern California.
If the fires have impacted a member of your Union, we are ready to provide aid and relief.
Below are the available resources:
Housing Assistance:
We can assist with first and last-month rental assistance and help find permanent, long-term housing. Please note: We cannot assist with deposits.
For those needing temporary housing, please visit the American Red Cross website to find a shelter near your area. Staff on-site can assist you if you need permanent, long-term housing.
To qualify for rental, mortgage, or utility assistance, please submit copies of the following:
• 3-Day Notice or Foreclosure Documentation
• Copy of a Utility Bill
• Disconnection Notice
• Proof of Income demonstrating the union member’s ability to make payments moving forward.
If any of your union members need assistance, please complete the LCS Assistance Intake Form available at https://lcs-la.org. Submit the completed form along with the required supporting documentation to our Programs Manager, Marcos Juan, at [email protected]. Marcos will review the submissions and follow up once all information and documents have been processed.
Utilities:
If your member has outstanding utility bills (e.g., electricity, gas, or water), we can assist with those bills.
Food:
We can provide your members with boxes of food. These boxes, prepared by fellow union members and can feed a family of four.
Air Quality:
The air quality across Southern California will be significantly impacted for an extended period. If you have respiratory concerns, we encourage the use of high-quality face masks. LCS can provide these masks for distribution to your members in need.

Congratulations to the newest group of graduates from the MC-3 Program, from the Tejon Indian Tribe.

7 weeks of training, and ready to work.

The Bakersfield JATC was honored to help with this cohort and show them what the Sheet Metal Workers Local 105, and our Apprenticeship Program has to offer.

The Bakersfield JATC has just finished two days of the National Apprenticeship Week. A Women in Trades day, and a Combination day of showing over 500 high school students what the Union Apprenticeships are all about. There were 7 different Union JATC's and our partners who showed up for this event.

We showed them some hands on projects, as well as showing them the scissor lift as part of what we do and how we use it in our trade.

We let them know that we do not charge them for our training, and we put them to work, it the "Earn As You Learn" method. Our first year apprentices start out with a taxable wage of $21.91 an hour and it comes with full benefits.

The last two days were highly successful and I would like to thank all the current apprentices for their help!

Just completed Laser Welding training, through the International Training Institute. (ITI) It was a great week with a great team and instructors.

We now have understanding of the safety precautions associated with laser welders, along with the setup and operation of the IPG LightWeld handheld laser welding systems. We can now introduce this technology to our JATC.

It’s amazing what can be done with these welders. And exciting to know we are ahead of the curve with this technology that will change the welding industry.
