My name is Amber Friend, owner, caregiver and early educator.

Harmony House is the culmination of my passion for early childhood education, 20+ years of experience working with families and young children, and my education in child development. My passion is early childhood education. Harmony House is the culmination of that passion, 20+ years of experience working with families and young children, and what I have learned through academia with my associates degrees in early childhood education and child development. Harmony House specializes in caring for children 0-3 years of age, and is the only facility in Kern County instituting Montessori philosophies with infants. I believe in meeting each child’s individual needs in order to develop a relationship based in trust with young children. Research shows warm, trusting relationships with caregivers is the primary factor necessary to support healthy growth and development in all areas. Maria Montessori once said that ‘play is the work of the child’, which is a sentiment I absolutely agree with. Play is the basis through which young children develop an understanding of the world around them and should be supported with developmentally appropriate materials and experiences. In my 20 years of experience, I have gathered that children who are provided with a prepared environment learn naturally. Careful observations for sensitive periods help me to provide the right experiences for children at the right time. Practical life work isn’t “busy work” — it’s how young children build concentration, independence, and confidence. When a toddler pours, scoops, or works with a real tool set — turning a screwdriver or an Allen wrench, matching each bolt to its hole — they’re refining fine motor control, bilateral coordination, and sequencing skills that lay the groundwork for everything from handwriting to problem-solving later on.

At Harmony House, we follow the child — offering real, purposeful tasks sized for little hands, in an environment that says “you can do this yourself.” That sense of “I did it” at 18 months old? It matters more than we often realize.

Watch the focus 🌾 This little one is fully absorbed in a practical life pouring activity — scooping dry rice from bowl to bowl with careful, deliberate movements. It looks simple, but so much is happening: building concentration, refining hand-eye coordination, and strengthening the fine motor control that will one day support handwriting and independence in daily tasks.

At Harmony House, we follow the child — offering real, purposeful work with real materials, sized just for them. Activities like this aren’t just “busy work.” They’re the foundation for order, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Little hands, big love. 🌿🐞
This Mother’s Day, our tiniest gardeners had a hand in every part of this gift — quite literally. We took a cutting from one of our own plants, and the children helped dry and callous it before planting it into its new home. Then came the magic: thumbprint ladybugs, pressed with care onto each pot.
The result? A living gift that grew right here at Harmony House, shaped by the little people who love their mamas most.
