Before Semi Trucks, This Was Heavy Hauling in Nevada
This historic photograph captures a moment from early Nevada, where two freight teams, they look like horses rather than mules to me, although I could be wrong, haul three wagons loaded with sacks of wool across a low wooden bridge spanning a narrow stream.
The loads they were hauling were part of an industry that helped shape Northern Nevada. From the 1850s through the mid-20th century, the region's historic sheepherder ranges formed the backbone of the American West's wool and mutton industries. During those years, more than half a million sheep passed through Northern Nevada, creating an extensive network of high desert and alpine grazing routes managed primarily by Basque, Scottish, and Mexican sheepherders.
Unfortunately, the photograph isn't dated, and I haven't been able to determine where in Nevada it was taken
