In 1924, Owens Valley residents did something extraordinary—they took control of part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct and opened the gates. 💧⛰️

The dispute had been building for years as Los Angeles acquired land and water rights hundreds of miles away to supply its rapidly growing population. On November 16, residents occupied the Alabama Gates near Lone Pine and diverted aqueduct water through the spillway toward the Owens River. The occupation lasted several days and became one of the defining moments of California’s famous water conflict. (LADWP)

The Owens Valley story is much more complicated than a simple battle between one city and a handful of farmers. It involved agriculture, urban growth, land values, public power, community survival, negotiations, lawsuits, and competing claims to one of California’s most valuable resources. Before Interstate 5 crossed the mountains, California drivers faced the legendary Ridge Route.

Completed in 1915, the twisting Castaic–Tejon Route climbed directly across the mountain ridges between Southern California and the route toward Bakersfield. With 697 curves, early motorists faced dust, steep grades, sharp turns, and mountain driving that demanded constant attention.

It was one of the roads that helped transform automobile travel across California.
