Professor Jillian Nelson has been selected by Publishers Weekly for a scholar profile in its special supplement published in advance of the annual AAR/SBL meeting. Each year, Publishers Weekly’s religion correspondent, Cathy Lynn Grossman, reviews hundreds of conference program listings to identify a small group of scholars whose work stands out for its originality, relevance, and public appeal.

Professor Nelson caught her attention with Dr. Nelson's work at the intersection of religion and contemporary culture—including her paper, “Hidden Transcripts at Halftime: Bad Bunny, the Bible, and the Beats of Resistance,” her podcast, “Not Your Grandma’s Bible Study,” and her scholarship published with Bloomsbury.

The profile will feature Professor Nelson’s research, publications, and broader work as a scholar of religion, introducing her scholarship to the wide readership of Publishers Weekly ahead of this year’s AAR/SBL meeting.

Congratulations to Professor Nelson on this wonderful recognition!

TCU Religion was glad to join the AddRan College of Liberal Arts Welcome Back Event on September 3, 2026, in the Quad!

Dr. Antoinette DeNapoli, Dr. Patricia Duncan, and Dr. Matthew Calhoun spent the afternoon welcoming students back to campus, sharing information about the Religion Department, and connecting with members of the AddRan community.

Events like this are a wonderful reminder that the beginning of a new academic year is about more than returning to the classroom — it is also about building community, making connections, and helping students discover the many ways the study of religion can enrich their TCU experience.
