This school year ended with us saying a heartfelt Hyla thank you to our long-time Business Manager, Jana Morris.

For more than 20 years, Jana has supported and helped shape our school community with her dedication, expertise, kindness, and steady presence. We are deeply grateful for all she has given to Hyla and wish her every happiness in her well-earned retirement.

While we know Jana can never truly be replaced, we are excited to welcome the next person to join our team as our Bookkeeper.

Lost Girl by Kimberley Belflower (who also wrote John Proctor is the Villain, an amazing play if you don’t know it) is a modern day retelling of the Peter Pan story from wendy’s perspective after returning home from Wonderland. We can't wait to see Willa this weekend!

Orcas Island Exploration week last month was one for the books! 🌊🌲
We packed our days with adventure—beach walks, incredible meals at the lodge, the giant swing, rock climbing, forest scavenger hunts, games in the woods, zip lining, and sea kayaking. Every day brought something new to discover.
But the biggest surprise? Our evenings.
Instead of more high-energy activities, we gravitated toward board games each night, and they quickly became the highlight of the week. There was plenty of hot chocolate and apple cider to keep everyone fueled, but "winding down" isn't quite the right phrase—it was more like ending each day with laughter, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos.
Scrabble was reinvented with an "anything goes" rulebook, Uno somehow required silly accents and overly formal speech, and classic games like Risk found a whole new generation of enthusiastic players.
Sometimes the most memorable moments aren't the biggest adventures—they're the simple ones spent gathered around a table, laughing together. Thanks to everyone who made Exploration Week such a fun, unforgettable experience!

Meet our middle school math teacher, Cindy, who focuses on helping students build strong problem-solving skills and confidence in the classroom. She creates a supportive environment, encourages curiosity, and makes math approachable and engaging for every learner.

What’s one lesson (academic or life) you hope every student takes from your class?
To embrace your pace, no matter how fast or slow, you can still do it if you put in the work.

What’s one thing you do differently than most teachers? Students are all working on different things during the same period.

What's one tradition or routine in your classroom that your students love? Playing a set game at the beginning of class, regular projects that happen every year, knighting ceremonies (when students get a new math book- it is a celebrated milestone), getting candy for FOILing and Factoring.

What does student success look like to you? Trying, making mistakes and correcting them. That is often when the light bulb goes off!

How do you hope your students remember you years from now? That I had funny rhymes or songs that helped students learn, that I made math fun, that I was clear and easy to learn from, that I believed in them.

What’s a book, experiment, or project you teach that always sparks excitement in your students? Probability games- making the carnival games in 7th grade is a highlight. Students also enjoy the art projects (building houses, drawing comics and mandalas).

Hyla Middle School students traveled to the beautiful Methow Valley in Winthrop, Washington for a week of outdoor exploration and adventure. Surrounded by the rugged landscapes of the North Cascades, students challenged themselves, built new skills, and strengthened connections with their peers and the natural world.
The week included a day of rock climbing at Phun Rocks in Mazama, where students learned new techniques, supported one another, and gained confidence on the rock. Another highlight was a full day of whitewater rafting through Black Canyon with Methow Rafting, an experience that required teamwork, resilience, and a willingness to embrace adventure.
Students also spent time hiking in the mountains near Washington Pass, taking in spectacular alpine scenery and experiencing the beauty of the North Cascades firsthand. Whether on the river, on the rock, or on the trail, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and engage fully with the world around them.

Our Exploration Week trip to Yellowstone was filled with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable experiences! 🌲🦬✨
Over five days, students explored some of the most incredible landscapes in the country, from the eruptions of Old Faithful to the vibrant colors of Grand Prismatic Spring. Along the way, they hiked scenic trails, searched for wildlife, learned about the park's unique natural features, and experienced the beauty of Yellowstone up close.
The trip also included horseback riding, campfires and s'mores, stargazing in Island Park, a visit to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, and even a Montana rodeo. Whether spotting bison in a valley, sharing stories around the fire, or taking in a breathtaking view, students embraced every opportunity to explore, learn, and connect with one another.
Exploration Week is about stepping outside of our everyday routines, trying new things, and experiencing learning in new ways. This trip provided plenty of opportunities for adventure, teamwork, and memories that will last long after the week ended.

Last week, we celebrated a special milestone as our 8th graders shared their heartfelt testimonials and reflected on their middle school journey. 💚

Through stories of growth, friendship, challenges, and achievements, each testimonial highlighted our students. We are so proud of each one of them and all they have accomplished during their middle school years.

Congratulations, 8th graders! We can't wait to see all that you will achieve. ✨
