Shannon is a second generation biracial Korean American, raised sansei by adoptive parents in a biracial Japanese American family. She got her first solo in her elementary school’s holiday program at the age of 8, singing the first verse of “So the Sheep May Safely Graze” and has performed music ever since. Her parents raised her on Big Band jazz and frequent trips to the theatre. After she and her brother received a bass guitar for Christmas when she was 10, she moved away from singing to instrumental music starting with the clarinet at the age of 11. After being selected to play in the California Band Directors Association Honor Band while in junior high school, she switched to alto saxophone at age 14, then to tenor saxophone at age 15 to play as a soloist in her high school jazz band. During this time, she taught herself how to play the piano and the flute. She went on to study Music Performance at Humboldt State University with Voice as her primary instrument and piano and flute as her secondary instruments and gave voice lessons in Arcata, CA. There she performed in the Mad River Transit Singers, the Madrigal Choir, the University Singers (where she had the opportunity to conduct as well), and in operatic, musical theatre and stage play productions at HSU, Humboldt Light Opera Company and Pacific Arts Center Theatre. She continued to do musicals and stage plays in Tustin, CA and later in Seattle, Bellevue, Renton and currently performs on Bainbridge Island & Seattle, WA. From college until now, she has regularly performed as a lead singer with jazz, funk and rock bands, and also played that bass guitar and sang with Seattle bands Shelix and Plains of Abraham. These days, she can be found performing locally in many different genres: Blues, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Brazilian, Latin, Jazz, Calypso, Rock, and Social Dance. BISA Vocal Studio Students range in ages from 7 years old to senior citizens and work on a wide range of music, theatre, and film. Some students have performed professionally, others in Mainstage and theatre school productions at Bainbridge Performing Arts, Ovation Performing Arts Northwest, school productions, talent shows, & local events and Seattle School of Rock & Rain City Rock Camp for Girls performances. Some are lead singers in bands, have their own solo acts, while others are members of community and school choirs & theatre groups. Others study with us to gain confidence enough to sing in the car or to their significant other as a special surprise. We are incredibly proud to be a part of our students' lives, watching them grow and foster a love of music and performance.
