K9 Sunken Oil Odor Plume On-Water Detection Trials

Chiron K9 LLC and Owens Coastal Consultants recently conducted field trials for the development of a device to deliver headspace gases of target oils to a lake bed to replicate a pipeline leak or a sunken oil deposit. The prototype delivery device worked well and an oil detection K9 has been successfully trained to search and detect the odor plume.

In the next phase in the program the K9 has been trained to direct the search by signaling to the boat operator to steer towards the center of the odor plume; that is, towards the highest odor concentration or source where the gas has reached the water surface. A 550-meter long GPS track line from one test shows the boat moving forward in a zig zag search pattern into the wind from the west (left) and then changing course when signaled by the canine.

K9 Oil Detection Testing (July 2021)

In February 2020, a set of heavy, viscous, and weathered oils were placed at 5 m (15 foot) depths in pre-deployed pipes in a field near San Antonio, TX, to evaluate the ability of canines to detect these oil types at those depths.

Following that successful field trail (20 correct responses out of 21 targets), Owens Coastal Consultants revisited the site in late July 2021 with Chiron K9 LLC and the canine detected both of the targets (a weathered Macondo oil and a Bunker C) that we were able to relocate. The survey conditions were less than ideal compared to the original trials as dense vegetation had grown in the intervening 16-month period and one of the pipes had been covered by almost 60 cm (2 feet) of sediment!
