We’re halfway through our Summer Reading Road Trip! 🚗

Over the next two weeks, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer encourages our young Michiganders to stop in at their local public library to read, explore, and most importantly: sign up for a library card (if they haven’t already)!

Libraries fuel curiosity, imagination, and a lifetime of learning, and our librarians are essential partners that are helping achieve stronger literacy outcomes for all kids. They truly help every child read!

Here are your challenges for Stop #3:

➡️ Sign up for a library card (if you don’t already have one!)
➡️ Check out and finish a book from the library
➡️ Attend an event hosted by your local library
➡️ Join a club that meets at a Michigan library and attend a meeting
➡️ Add four more entries to your summer journal. Consider reflecting on something new you learned while exploring your library.

When readers complete a challenge from Stop #1, Stop #2, or Stop #3, remember to visit Michigan.gov/SummerReadingRoadTrip to submit your entry and join the over 600 readers that have already entered to win.

Let’s keep reading!

Bloom Through Movement: Teaching the Flower Life Cycle with Yoga

Imagine your child curling into a tiny ball on the floor, pretending to be a seed tucked safely beneath the soil. With a deep breath, they slowly begin to stretch, reaching their arms toward the sky like a tiny sprout searching for sunlight. As they continue growing into a tall flower, they're doing much more than having fun—they're learning science through movement. Teaching the flower life cycle with yoga helps children understand concepts by engaging both their minds and bodies. They experience each stage by becoming the seed, the sprout, the growing stem, the blooming flower, and even the flower gently releasing its seeds to begin the cycle again. This kind of movement-based learning strengthens memory because children are actively participating instead of simply listening.

Yoga also helps children develop balance, coordination, body awareness, and flexibility while encouraging mindfulness and imagination. Adding slow breaths as the flower "grows" teaches children to connect movement with calm, supporting emotional regulation and focus. You can make the experience even richer by talking about what flowers need to grow, such as sunlight, water, healthy soil, and time. Afterward, invite your child to draw the flower's life cycle or plant a real seed to watch the process unfold in nature. When children learn through movement, play, and hands-on experiences, lessons become meaningful and memorable. Sometimes the best classroom isn't a desk—it's a little body pretending to bloom one breath, one stretch, and one joyful movement at a time.
