What a fantastic opportunity to champion the many great things happening in Azle ISD!

Yesterday, Superintendent Todd Smith joined education and business leaders at the Fort Worth Chamber event "State of Economic Impact", presented by UTA West. The panel focused on how decisions made today strengthen the workforce for years to come.

Mr. Smith highlighted two of our innovative CTE programs and industry partners:
❄️ MR Braz and Associates – Industrial Refrigeration
🏗️ IUOE Local 178 – Crane & Rigging

We are grateful for the opportunity this event provided to spotlight a few of our amazing CTE opportunities!

Fellow panelists included: Bobby Ahdieh, Dean, Texas A&M University School of Law, Dr. Peter Licata, Superintendent, Fort Worth ISD, Dr. Tamara L. Brown, Provost & Senior VP for Academic Affairs, The University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. Zarina Blankenbaker, President, Tarrant County College, NW, and Cindy Hames, President, Junior Achievement of the Chisholm Trail, Inc.

Today, the Texas Education Agency released its A-F accountability ratings for Texas public schools. As I evaluate the scores for Azle ISD (78), I see areas to celebrate and areas where we can improve. A lot of work goes into the efforts of our district to make a difference to every child, every chance, every day.

I will preface these comments by saying I am not a fan of this accountability system, and I hate how the media and public can use it to disparage our schools. For elementary and middle schools, the A-F grade is almost solely based on STAAR scores. It seems unfair that a school's entire grade is based on a one-day test that sometimes depends on a student’s willingness to take it, not their mastery of the subject. It really doesn't consider all the other amazing things that happen on campus during the other 170+ days of the year. It doesn’t adequately account for the variety of factors that affect our students day in and day out. I think it is a highly flawed way to assess our schools, but it is the system we are in.

While not perfect, I think the accountability rating for high schools gives a fairer and more accurate assessment. The letter grade does consider some testing – the EOCs (end-of-course exams) for Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and U.S History. But it also considers several other factors, including graduation rates and CCMR (career, college, and military readiness). CCMR includes factors such as demonstrating college readiness in math and reading/language arts, AP exam performance, earning dual credit, earning an IBC (industry-based certification), military enlistments, and others. I think this gives a much more accurate assessment of a school.

When you take a more holistic approach to assessing our schools, I think you get a much more accurate view of our district. Both of our High School environments show improvement from last year. AHS improved to an 84 while Hornet Academy improved to a 98.

While we still have plenty of room for improvement across many campuses, please don’t let a letter grade based on a one-day test shape your view of a campus or the district. We are in the middle of some significant changes in our district that are already showing positive results. I continue to believe Azle ISD offers incredible educational opportunities in our area. I believe the work we do today will help lead us into the best days ahead, and a letter grade assigned by a deeply flawed system will not change that.

It’s the last night before the first day of school. Tomorrow our feeds will be filled with pictures of our kids with their new backpacks and lunch boxes. Our district has been working hard to treat every day like it is the first day!

Here are a few encouragements I would love for you to consider:

1. Your kid is experiencing their new grade for the first time. That brings nerves, excitement, and possibly a mixture of both. Help create a good flow tomorrow. Be their support as they take on a new adventure.

2. Systems are created to be improved upon. First day rhythms have been thought out and adjusted from previous years. There will be more people in our parking lots these next few days than there will be all year long. Please be patient and considerate to our teams getting your kids safely from you and back to you!

3. There is a lot to celebrate! We truly have an incredible district where our kids get to thrive. That is not the case everywhere. Ask your kids about their day and listen for the bright spots. Look around the hallways during drop off and see the excitement from our teachers. Let those be the things we celebrate tomorrow after a great first day.

My view this afternoon from Azle ISD’s Convocation. What a great way to get geared up for a school year! Our Assistant Superintendent Jessica Hanson did a fantastic job casting a powerful vision for the difference everyone in our district can make! (Even if she is way off base about decorating for Christmas in November!)

Grateful and excited to have the opportunity to grow and learn at the Summer Leadership Institute. Over the next few days school board members from all across the state will assemble to learn about better ways to serve their schools. It is always great to hear from other districts because it reminds me how special Azle ISD and their families are! We have a great community.

I’m about to enter the Hornets Nest 2026!
This is such a cool event to judge. Our 5th and 6th grade GT students have spent time creating a product that solves a real life challenge and present it “Shark Tank” style.
It is such a cool environment to celebrate the hard work of our Hornets!
