100 million stadium bond! $252 Property Tax Increase

Just 18 months ago 2/3 of AZLE taxpayers soundly rejected an $80 million school bond filled with unneeded, wasteful spending. They’re back! The Azle School Board is back to shake the Money Tree—YOU, the Azle taxpayers—for over $100 million; much of it for unneeded, extra-curricular, ‘WANTS’ that YOU will have to pay for.

We’ve all seen the clear-cutting of land for subdivisions in Azle. It causes loss of trees, & deer habitat, and the need for more schools. There’s no escaping it. We will have to pay for more school capacity. Bond Proposition ‘A’ addresses the needs for classroom space and should be approved {$46.8 million}. Propositions ‘B’ {$41.8 Million} and ‘C’, {the stadium again, for $16.9 Million} include wasteful spending and should be rejected.

With people still reeling from the economic effects of Covid and the 2021 Freeze, it’s wrong for the school board to pack this bond with projects unrelated to school capacity. This bond addresses urgent needs (school capacity), and then buries them under a mountain of unnecessary spending. A board member has already stated that this bond, if fully approved, is only ‘catch-up’ and there will be more property tax increases (bonds) coming.

Turnout in springtime City and School Board Elections is notoriously low and Bonds usually pass. A few hundred pro-bond voters can raise everyone’s property taxes. Vote early (April 19-27) or on Saturday, May 1st. Wasteful spending drives rents up. If you’re over 65, vote against wasteful spending for your neighbors. Do it for the children! Today’s students are tomorrow’s property taxpayers. Don’t burden them with the costs of someone’s wish list. Your vote matters. 3 PROPOSITIONS FOR $105 MILLION!

Proposition A: New Elementary #6, Liberty, Eagle Heights, and Hoover renovations - $46.8 Million (ACADEMIC CLASSROOM SPACE-NEEDED)

Proposition B: High School Expansions/Renovations of Science Labs, Fine Arts, Cafeteria, and Field House - $41.8 Million (MOSTLY EXTRA-CURRICULAR--WASTEFUL)

Proposition C: Hornet Stadium Renovation - $16.9 Million (STADIUM--WASTEFUL, AGAIN, SERIOUSLY?)

NEEDS VERSUS WANTS

First Covid, then the “2021 Big Freeze,” and now a $240 annual property tax increase! Azle ISD again wants to force you and your neighbors to pay $105 million for a bond with a stadium, a field house, and a “black box” performing arts theater. (See Azle News, Feb 17) Just 18 months ago, 63% of Azle voters rejected a bond filled with similar “wants” instead of “needs.” The AISD school board is back to “shake the money tree”—you.

Like it or not, Azle is growing fast and we will need more school capacity. The expansion of Liberty, Hoover and Eagle Heights elementary schools along with a new elementary, (Proposition A: $47 million) is truly needed. Vote FOR Proposition A on May 1st.

Propositions B & C ($58 million) include those “wants” that have been previously rejected by a 2:1 majority. Vote AGAINST Propositions B & C. The board has already stated that this bond is only “catch up” and there will be more tax increases to come. Let’s vote FOR Azle’s true educational needs and not for someone’s extra-curricular wants.

Only about 5% vote in City & School Board elections in the Spring. Don’t let a small minority vote to raise your taxes for their extra-curricular wants. Get out and vote!
