Whatâs more American than whole hog BBQ in eastern NC? đ
This week on American Business Story with Taylor Walden, Taylor sits down with Michael Letchworth, co-owner of Sam Jones BBQ. Michael started at Skylight Inn at 16 as one of his first jobs in high school, worked the counter, washed dishes, and felt like it was just another restaurant job. At the time, he didnât understand the history. He didnât know how to cook a pig.
Then one night in 2013, sitting around a burn barrel at an event in Raleigh, something clicked. He realized Skylight wasnât just another restaurant, i was something worth preserving. That realization led to a partnership with Samuel Jones, the opening of Sam Jones BBQ in 2015, and a crash course in opening a restaurant.
During our conversation, Michael walks through the 100 day work streak that nearly broke him, the moment he sat on his front porch during COVID with financials spread out wondering how long they could survive, and the consultant who told him to stop complaining and start leading. He talks about why throwing bodies at problems isnât always the answer, and the loneliness that comes with leadership when youâre trying to hold it all together.
He also opens up about Fox Hollow Outdoors the lifestyle brand and content project he started with his eight year old son Larken, how a Yeti campaign turned into a TV show, and why heâs learning that highly produced content isnât always what connects with people.
Michaelâs story is encouraging, raw, real, and a reminder that success doesnât mean you have all the answers. It just means you kept going when everyone else quit.
