“Prepare your child for the path, not the path for your child”
What does this look like when implemented in a Montessori classroom and how can Montessori parents implement this in the home?
In the Montessori classroom, we operate on the belief that children are capable.
When given the space and freedom to learn (including both success and failure), children grow in confidence, independence, and resilience.
This does not occur without support and care, of course. Our guides are always providing consistent support, encouragement, and guidance as needed.
Rather, we live out the well-known Montessori quote, “Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed”.
What does this look like in the home?
The most practical way to implement this principle is to simply slow down and let your child attempt a task that otherwise would get done much faster and with more success if you were to help.
Often, we are limited by time-constraints in this busy world. Rushing to get to school, rushing to get to dance, then home for dinner, then bath, then bedtime. It can feel challenging to slow down and let your child “do for themselves” when we know it can get done much faster and more easily if we do it ourselves.
But what do we lose when we always do it ourselves? Our children lose the opportunity to try, fail, and eventually succeed!
Perhaps you start with just one activity that you let your child completely own and attempt for themselves. This may look like:
-getting themselves dressed, even if it takes 20 minutes and their shirt is inside out
-preparing their own snack, even if it makes a big mess that needs cleaned up after (they can do that, too!)
-zipping up their own jacket
-putting their own shoes on
-climbing on something in such a way that they very well may fall (with minimal risk of serious injury).
Start small. Choose one task/routine out of your day that you feel your child can handle on their own.
Your child very well may already be communicating their desire to do a certain activity on their own.
Encourage them. Sit back and observe. Do not interrupt or try to do it faster or better. Marvel at their abilities and confidence!
