What is Montessori education, really?
If you've heard the word "Montessori" but aren't sure what sets it apart from traditional schooling, here's the short version:
Montessori is a child-centered approach developed over a century ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician who studied how children actually learn โ not how we assume they should. Instead of desks facing a chalkboard, you'll find hands-on materials, mixed-age classrooms, and students moving through carefully designed activities at their own pace.
The heart of it? Kids are trusted to be capable, curious, and self-directed โ with teachers guiding rather than lecturing. The goal isn't just academic achievement, but raising confident, independent thinkers who love learning for its own sake.
