Teacher and students who are gifted in 3rd grade at Natural Bridge Elementary in North Miami, Florida have been making daily observations of the rare Atala Hairstreak Butterfly.

Today we have eggs, baby, and big fat caterpillars eating all over the coontie plants in our family gardens. Some coontie cones were covered with more than 30 caterpillars at a time, feeding on any part of the plant available.

As of May 10th 2021, our count of live eggs and caterpillars in our garden is at 658. This includes both recently laid eggs and live recently hatched caterpillars. This morning we also witnessed and photgraphed several Adult female Atalas in the act of laying more eggs. Here pictured below is a female Atala laying eggs in our "Secret Annex" family of 3 coontie bushes at the far front end of the north gated garden in our school.
