At the 2026 CrossFit Games, fans had a chance to learn from the best.

In the spectator workout area, athletes took on a challenging workout consisting of running and sn**ches, coached by expert CrossFit Seminar Staff Trainers, whose eyes are highly trained to spot the smallest movement faults and turn them into opportunities to improve.

Using the tell-show-do-check process, trainers taught the athletes what to do, demonstrated the movements, watched them move, and provided the cues they needed to make the movements safe and efficient.

With a technical Olympic lift like the sn**ch, great coaching matters. Trainers followed the CrossFit charter: mechanics first, consistency second, intensity last.

Tune in as Jocelyn Rylee (CF-L4) breaks down the coaching of the world’s best while in San Jose, California.

CrossFit Seminar Staff trainer Dustin Virgil takes athletes through a progression for the toes-to-bar during a Level 1 Certificate Course at The Ranch in Aromas, California.

In CrossFit, movement progressions break complex movements into manageable elements, allowing athletes to develop the technique and coordination needed to perform the full range of motion. For the toes-to-bar, it starts with the kip swing.

From there, athletes work on elevating their legs and feet before progressing to the final step: bringing their toes to the bar.

CrossFit works for everyone because intensity is relative to each person’s physical and mental capacity. When people train near their individual limits, whether they are an elite athlete or an elderly adult, they experience the same core benefits.

The needs of an Olympic athlete and a grandparent differ only in degree, not in kind. One aims for peak performance while the other seeks functional independence, but both need functional movement. Because of this, the foundational program doesn’t change; it is simply scaled.

Everyone does the same workout, scaled to their level.

Ready to master the single-leg squat? Work through these drills to build the mobility, balance, and strength you need.

✅ Narrow Gymnastics Squat: Can you hit full range of motion with feet and knees together? This identifies mobility faults before going single-leg.

✅ Toe-Spotted Squat: Start challenging your balance by taking away full ground contact.

✅ Pistol Off Box: The perfect scale if hamstring flexibility or hip-flexor strength (to keep the foot elevated) is an issue. It allows you to focus 100% on the controlled descent phase of the movement.

✅ Candlestick Roll: Practice creating momentum from a strong hollow position to pop up into a gymnastics squat or pistol. Hollow + tension at the top is crucial.

➡️ Struggling to get out of the bottom? Set up parallettes, benches, or boxes to help you get back to the top of your pistol! Adjust the height based on the assistance you need.

Full range of motion about a joint describes the natural anatomical end ranges of a movement.

Using full range of motion allows a greater complement of musculature to be used and usually results in a better balance of forces at critical joints.

Consistently training through a full range of motion also promotes flexibility and long-term joint health, and is often what life demands.

At a recent CrossFit Level 1 Seminar at The Ranch in Aromas, California, a trainer walks a group through a progression for the kipping pull-up.

Progressions are movement drills that break down otherwise complex movement into manageable chunks.

Each drill highlights a specific point of performance of the given movement, allowing each athlete to place full physical and mental effort into a focused skill.

is defined as constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity.

To improve fitness, we have to define it: work capacity across broad time and modal domains.

That definition allows us to make meaningful assertions about training, refine best practices, and fulfill our charter of advancing human performance, regardless of where you are in your fitness journey.

Trying to outwork a bad diet is a losing battle — you can’t outrun your own biology.

In the Theoretical Hierarchy of Athlete Development, nutrition is the base. Every meal triggers a hormonal response — insulin stores energy, glucagon mobilizes it.

When refined sugar and processed foods keep your insulin spiked, it leads to hyperinsulinemia and long-term chronic disease. No amount of time in the gym fixes poor metabolic health.

Stick to the core prescription: Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar.

Real food is your best defense and your strongest foundation. Build that first.

Progressions, skill-transfer drills, and assistance exercises can equally contribute to the learning process of the novice, and to the refinement and mastery of the elite.
