The arrival of fall is a wonderful reminder that science is happening all around us. After all, sometimes the best science lessons begin simply by looking outside and asking, “Why?”

Labor Day is ultimately about recognizing the people whose work helps communities thrive. As we enjoy the long weekend, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate the many skills, ideas, and contributions that make our schools, neighborhoods, cities, and country possible—and to encourage children to see themselves as future creators, problem-solvers, and contributors to their own communities.

Challenge Island hands-on STEAM lessons are especially valuable because children become active creators. When kids build, design, experiment, and solve problems, they are practicing important skills without realizing they are learning! They figure out what works, learn from what doesn’t, communicate their ideas, and trying again. These experiences can help foster creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, flexibility, and perseverance.
