Why Some People Put Ginger In Their Butts? 🌶️

Yes, there’s a name for it: fi***ng.

Fi***ng, also called “gingering,” is a form of k/nk and sensation play involving raw ginger placed against sensitive tissue, most commonly through an//l insertion. The compounds that give ginger its familiar spicy kick can create sensations ranging from warmth and tingling to intense burning.

So why would someone want that?

In B//SM, pain and pleasure aren’t necessarily opposites. Intense sensations can become erot//c within a context of desire, anticipation, trust, and consensual power exchange. Some people are drawn to the physical sensation itself, while others may enjoy the psychological elements of control, surrender, taboo, or simply doing something unconventional.

Interestingly, the practice has a much less s//xual history. The word is connected to “feaguing,” an old practice in which ginger or another irritant was placed in a horse’s rect//m to make the animal raise its tail and appear more spirited. Modern k/nk communities later adopted ginger as a form of sensation play.

But “natural” doesn’t mean risk-free. Ginger can cause significant irritation or allergic reactions, its oils can accidentally transfer to the eyes, and inserted material can become difficult to retrieve. There also isn’t robust clinical research establishing fi***ng as a medically “safe” s//xual practice.

Ginger might be your thing... or it might absolutely not be. What matters is having language to explore desires, boundaries, yeses, nos, and maybes.

Our FREE “CHECK” Yes/No/Maybe Checklist can help you start that conversation with curiosity and without judgment.

What Is A “Free Use” K/nk? 🔓

“Free use” can sound like there are no rules. In practice, the fantasy depends on having them.

Free use is a k/nk where partners agree in advance that certain s//xual initiation can happen without asking each time. For some, the appeal is feeling intensely wanted. For others, it’s the surrender of not having to decide when something begins. The initiating partner may find spontaneity, access, control, or being trusted with that power erot/c.

But advance agreement isn’t permanent consent.

Even in dynamics described as “24/7,” partners can establish conditions around when, where, and how initiation happens. And regardless of what was agreed to beforehand, either person can still say no, not now, or stop.

That distinction matters because the very thing that makes free use exciting can also make it complicated. If saying “yes” becomes expected, saying “no” can start to feel harder.

A healthy dynamic keeps refusal genuinely available without guilt, pressure, punishment, or the fear that setting a boundary will damage the relationship.

The fantasy may be spontaneous. The boundaries shouldn’t be.

Our FREE “CHECKLIST” helps couples explore fantasies, boundaries, k/nks, and new experiences through open, judgment-free communication.

The People You Meet Can Change Your Career 🤝

You come to a conference to learn. But sometimes, the people sitting beside you become just as valuable as what’s happening on stage.

For Alyssa Ljub, that’s one of the things that makes the SHA community so powerful. Through SHA events, she’s built connections with people she still follows, sees, and reconnects with today.

You’re surrounded by peers at different stages of their careers, alongside professionals whose work you may have admired for years. Suddenly, someone you’ve looked up to isn’t just a name you know, they’re in the room with you, learning, talking, and becoming part of your professional community.

And this year, Alyssa returns to that community as a presenter at the 2026 SHA Annual S//xological Conference.

It’s a fitting full-circle moment: from finding community through SHA to contributing her own expertise to it. As Alyssa says, if this is something you’re passionate about, “you really can’t do better than that.”

Why OPP Is A Big Ooppss! 🚩

In consensual non-monogamy, a One Pen/s Policy (OPP) typically describes an arrangement where a woman can date or have s//x with other women—but not other men, while her male partner may still be free to pursue women himself.

But the issue isn’t simply that a relationship happens to include only one pen/s. The bigger question is: who made that decision, and why?

There’s an important difference between someone choosing which genders they want to date and having those choices restricted by a partner.

When women are considered “safe” while men are considered a threat, the rule can also reveal assumptions about whose relationships count as competition. Q***r relationships may be treated as less serious or less capable of becoming emotionally significant.

And underneath an OPP, there may be something else worth examining: insecurity. Opening a relationship can surface fears of comparison, inadequacy, or being replaced. Restricting a partner may make those fears feel more manageable, but it doesn’t necessarily address where they come from.

The term itself can also oversimplify gender by equating gen/tals with identity. A pen/s does not automatically mean “man,” and not every man has one.

Healthy consensual non-monogamy isn’t about having zero agreements. It’s about creating agreements through autonomy, communication, and mutual negotiation rather than using rules to manage one partner’s fear.

Because sometimes the most important question isn’t “What are we allowed to do?” It’s “What do we actually need to feel safe, respected, and understood?”

Our FREE Yes / No / Maybe “CHECKLIST” can help you understand your desires, boundaries, and comfort levels, and start those conversations.

S//xual Health Can Be Serious Without Feeling Taboo 🤓

When your work centers on s//x and s//xuality, it can sometimes feel like you’re constantly navigating subjects the rest of the world still considers taboo.

That’s why being surrounded by people who get it can feel so different.

At the SHA Annual Conference, attendees aren’t just having important conversations—they’re creating a space where curiosity, humor, openness, and serious professional learning can exist together.

As this attendee puts it, being around “like-minded s//x nerds” is an incredible feeling. Because making conversations about s//x more approachable isn’t just fun at a conference. It can influence how we communicate with clients, educate our communities, and show up in our professions.

Maybe the field needs more spaces where we can take the work seriously without always having to make s//x feel so serious.

Join your fellow s//x nerds at the 2026 SHA Annual S//xological Conference, October 15–17 at the Grand Hyatt Denver Downtown.

The Case Of Somnophilia: Can Sleep And Consent Ever Coexist? 😴

Somnophilia is a s//xual interest involving someone who is asleep, or the fantasy of someone being asleep. But the psychology behind it can be more complex than simply being attracted to sleep itself.

For some, the appeal may center on what sleep represents: vulnerability, surrender, passivity, trust, control, or freedom from the self-consciousness that can accompany intimacy.

Research involving 437 adults also suggests there isn’t one “somnophilia personality.” Different forms of the fantasy were associated with different patterns. Taking an active role in consensual scenarios was associated with more dominant and sadistic fantasies, while interest in the passive role was associated with more submissive, masochistic, and consensual non-consent fantasies.

And that distinction matters: fantasy ≠ intention.

Having a fantasy about someone who cannot respond does not automatically mean wanting to violate another person’s boundaries in reality. But when fantasy becomes real-world behavior, consent becomes critical.

Someone who is asleep cannot actively consent in that moment or necessarily communicate discomfort or withdraw consent. That’s why assumptions, vague conversations, or an offhand “I’d be into that” aren’t enough.

For people interested in exploring the fantasy together, simulated sleep offers an alternative where the dynamic can be recreated while everyone remains conscious and able to communicate or stop.

Fantasies can be complicated. Consent shouldn’t be.

Our free “CHECKLIST” helps couples explore fantasies, boundaries, k//nks, and new experiences through open, judgment-free communication.

Are You A T***k? ✨

For decades, “t***k” has been part of the LGBTQ+ lexicon—but what the term means today is more complicated than the stereotype it started with.

Traditionally, a t***k described a young gay man who was slim, youthful-looking, had little facial or body hair, and was often assumed to be white and cisgender. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, recorded use of the word dates back to the 1950s, though its exact origin remains uncertain.

But q***r language evolves alongside the communities that use it.

Today, some trans, nonbinary, and gender-fluid people also identify with the term, while q***r communities have increasingly challenged the narrow body, racial, and gender standards historically attached to it.

And looking like the stereotypical t***k doesn’t tell you how someone identifies—or anything about their s//xual preferences, personality, dominance, submission, or relationship dynamics. Being a t***k certainly doesn’t automatically mean being a bottom.

That’s part of what makes labels complicated. They can give people language for understanding themselves and finding community while simultaneously feeling restrictive or exclusionary to someone else.

So, are you a t***k? Maybe. But ultimately, it’s a descriptor someone can choose for themselves—not one other people get to assign based on appearance.

Human s//xuality rarely fits into neat little boxes. If identity, attraction, relationships, and s//xuality make you curious about why humans are the way they are, take our 30-second “QUIZ” to discover which SHA Certification fits you.

Being Around People Who Just Get It ✨

There’s something powerful about walking into a room and realizing you don’t have to explain why you care so deeply about s//xuality.

You can talk openly. Ask questions. Get excited about the things you’re learning. Meet people who share your curiosity. And, as one attendee perfectly put it, be surrounded by “like-minded s//x nerds.”

Across these testimonials, one thing keeps coming up: community.

For some, it’s the first time they’ve experienced a space where conversations about s//x feel this open. For others, there isn’t one favorite moment because the entire experience—from the people they meet to everything happening around them—is what makes it memorable.

The SHA Annual Conference brings together professionals, educators, clinicians, researchers, and some seriously passionate s//x nerds to learn, connect, and experience what happens when you finally find your people.

Come find your community. Join us at the 2026 SHA Annual S//xological Conference, October 15–17 at the Grand Hyatt Denver.
