I LOVED visiting with the INCREDIBLE Girlstart squad! This is a group of brilliant, talented, and creative women who empower young girls in STEM education. I am honored to be a part of this AMAZING team! #stemeducation #empoweringwomen #brave #creative #curious 💖🌈🚀🌎🪐⭐️
Did you know Girlstart is celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year? That is 25 whole years serving up EXCITING STEM activities to the community, and empowering young girls by igniting their interest in science, technology, engineering and math. I am SO HONORED to have created graphics for Girlstart for 15 years! That is before Ruby was even born. I waited for what seemed like a million years for her to attend Girlstart camps. Then I watched her with pride when she attended and made some of the coolest things on the planet. I am one lucky girl to get to work with this powerful team of creative dynamos. Thank you Girlstart for inspiring Ruby and thousands of other young girls. Cheers to 25 more years! 💖🌈🥳🚀🪐

It's #WomeninSTEMday! We are challenged daily to solve new and intriguing problems. Girlstart is a non-profit believing that girls with more ideas will create more solutions.

To help with their mission to empower #GirlsinSTEM, CDM Smith has had the pleasure of donating $25,000 as part of our employee wellness program.

Check out more about Girlstart’s programs and how our donation will help in this thank you video!

Nonprofit Nation is back, and we have a serious breath of fresh air to kick off the New Year - fundraising rock star Rachel Muir!

Rachel Muir is one of my absolute favorite people. Her confidence in her voice is always inspiring, as is her journey to where she is today. When she was 26 years old, Rachel founded the nonprofit Girlstart in her living room, with $500 on a credit card.
Several years later, Rachel had raised over 10 million dollars and was featured on Oprah, CNN, and the Today show. OPRAH!

Right now, Rachel has one of my favorite email newsletters in the sector, with frequent pop culture references, animated GIFs, and lots of passion that translates right through the screen. She loves helping fundraisers raise more money and delight their donors.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:
✨ Her story of starting a nonprofit from scratch - and meeting Oprah
✨ Rachel's advice for those who want to lead their own nonprofit
✨ How to overcome fear of fundraising
✨ Ways that you can find your voice and be the leader you are meant to be

A Rachel Muir quotable: "If you are a fundraiser and you are overworking yourself and not taking a break to do their interesting quirky things you love that fuel you - remember that those things are good for your sanity and they are also part of what makes you fascinating to your donors."

Happy ! Celebrated every year from September 15 to October 15, HHM honors the achievements, contributions, culture, and history of Hispanic and Latine people.

To celebrate this important month, we want to highlight one of our favorite Hispanic , Dr. Ellen Ochoa! After going to school for engineering, Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to go to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1993. After her inaugural flight, she went to space three more times, logging nearly 1,000 hours in orbit. Later, she served as the 11th director of the Johnson Space Center, becoming its first Hispanic director and second female director. She is now a chair of the National Science Board and is part of the NSB's Vision 2030 effort to diversify the STEM workforce and develop skilled technical workers.

In 2014, she was also one of the recipients of Girlstart's second annual Women in STEM Awards, which recognize women who have made significant impacts in their fields and communities utilizing their STEM education. We're thankful for the important representation role models like Ochoa give to the next generation of STEM leaders, like Katya Echazarreta, the first Mexican-born American woman to travel to space earlier this year.

Join us today in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by educating yourself on the contributions of Hispanic and Latine people in STEM! 👩🏽‍🚀

Do you know a girl who's interested in a career in STEM? Our Houston Girls in STEM Conference is coming up on October 22 and you don't want to miss out! Girls currently in 4th-8th grades will discover the fun side of STEM careers at this unique annual conference just for them. The day is packed with three hands-on workshops led by women in STEM fields and separate workshops provided by grade level (4th-5th and 6th-8th). Registration closes October 16, so visit this link to register today:

P.S. Here are just a few quotes from girls who have attended the conference:

🧪 "I got to meet new girls who like science and math too!"
🧪 "I learned to be brave and creative."
🧪 "[The best thing about Girls in STEM is] the jobs you never knew existed, you learn about."

Girlstart After School clubs have officially kicked off! Thousands of 4th and 5th grade girls in Texas, Boston, and California will be taking part in FREE weekly STEM enrichment programs that build confidence and cultivate interest in STEM careers. Thanks to our amazing donors Chevron, Equinor and Energy Connects, this semester girls will receive copies of the new book "Everyday Superheroes: Women in Energy Careers" and read about 34 real-life energy superheroes powering our planet. From careers in research and policy to jobs as engineers and meteorologists, participants will learn how STEM shows up in every day life through diverse female role models working to make the world a better place. We can't wait for everything the girls will learn this semester! 🔌⚡

Happy Friday! Today's quote is from Dr. Marye Anne Fox, an internationally renowned chemist whose research advanced the world’s understanding of environmental chemistry and renewable energy. Fox dedicated her life to the study of chemistry, eventually receiving the National Medal of Science in 2011, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists, engineers, and inventors. And fun fact: she was one of the honorees at our second annual Women in STEM Awards in 2014!

We hope Fox's words inspire you to be brave, creative, and curious! 👩🏻‍🔬

We love this quote from Mae Jemison, one of our favorite and the first Black woman in space! Every other Friday, we'll be posting quotes from women in STEM who inspire us to be brave, creative, and curious.

Mae Jemison was born in Alabama in 1956 and knew from a young age that she wanted to study science. She grew up watching the Apollo 11 airings on TV but was disappointed that there were no female astronauts at that time. Fictional characters like Lieutenant Uhura from the original Star Trek TV show served as her inspiration to pursue a career in science.

After graduating in 1977 with a degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University, she went on to earn a Doctorate in Medicine. When Sally Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983, she was inspired to apply to the astronaut program at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. On September 12, 1992, Jemison and six other astronauts traveled to space aboard the shuttle Endeavor and this voyage made her the first Black woman in space. She later became the first real astronaut to star on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Today, Jemison leads the 100 Year Starship project through the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which works to make human space travel to another star possible within the next 100 years. She's also been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, the National Medical Association Hall of Fame and the Texas Science Hall of Fame.
