At neighborhood playgrounds across Texas, researchers in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education found that what’s beneath a child’s feet can significantly influence the way they play, move and interact with others.
After examining more than 400 playgrounds and surface types, they developed insights into what makes a playground truly playable.

As Dean Charles R. Martinez Jr. steps down as dean of the College of Education at the end of this summer, he leaves an enduring legacy defined by progress, partnership and purpose.
From the moment he arrived on the Forty Acres, Martinez embraced a bold vision to transform education and health for children, families and communities across Texas.
Under his leadership, the college launched the visionary Reimagine Education initiative, advanced groundbreaking research and achieved record growth in graduation rates and philanthropic support. As he now returns to his beloved “day job” as a professor and researcher, his impact as dean will continue to shape the future for years to come.
