An independent preK-12 school, nurturing, inspiring and engaging students since 1980.

Waldorf Education, founded in 1919 by the Austrian philosopher, scientist, and artist Rudolf Steiner, has grown into an educational movement with over 900 independent schools in 55 countries. Fundamental to Waldorf Education is the recognition that each human being is a unique individual who passes through distinct life stages and that it is the responsibility of education to address the physical,

This morning, our Head of School, Dr. Michelle Purghart, cut the ribbon for our new campus building! 🎀

Flanked by Site Committee Chair Branson Fustes and incoming Board of Trustees president Temaria Davis, Dr. Purghart officially unveiled the new building for our entire school community. ✨

This is the first new permanent construction on campus in more than 20 years and will be home to practical arts and science & technology classes. The additional restroom facilities will also be appreciated by everyone on campus! 😄

This wonderful building was designed by Andersson Wise Architects, while the landscaping is by Word + Carr.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life and look forward to all the learning, creativity, and discovery this new space will hold for generations of students to come. 🙏

Did you know making paper was this simple?

Let our 5th graders teach you! 😄

In their handwork class, the students learned about protecting the environment and sustainability. To put their learnings into practice, they collected all the paper scraps on campus they could find, and with the help of our handwork teacher Ms. Black, they recycled these into lovely little paper envelopes and cards. 💌

Watch until the end to see the result!

This type of hands-on activities is essential for how our children acquire knowledge. Research shows that experiential learning is how students learn best across all ages and all subject areas. 📈

“My child appears to be a chopsticks expert!”

One of our kindergarten moms could not believe her eyes when she brought her child to an Asian restaurant with her: he had absolutely no problems using chopsticks. 🍜

Little did she know that he had been practicing every Wednesday! In our Moongarden, that is rice day. The children enjoy their brown rice with seaweed, cucumber, sesame seed and soy sauce. Their favorite part though? Using chopsticks! Needless to say, they have become very proficient at it over the course of the year. 🍚

Why does the spelling of Maypole matter so much? 👀

So that you’re not misled, like one of our 2nd graders, into thinking there will be lots of “Maple” syrup at the event! 😄

Last Friday, all of our kindergarten and grades classes donned their flower crowns and festive spring outfits for this beautiful annual Waldorf tradition. The kindergarten classes danced around their own smaller Maypoles. A seniors procession opened the larger event, in which each of our grades classes performed their own dance around the Maypole. As we went up the grades, the dances became more complex. A wonderful experience for our grades’ and parents’ audience! 🌺🌼🌸

A little early this year—just trying to be mindful of the Texas heat!—this festival has its roots in ancient May Day celebrations. The Maypole symbolizes the growth of spring vegetation and the tree of life. 🌿

And for the first time, we had a Maypole Queen and King! Among the seniors, they were picked by our own campus chickens the day before. The first to have a chicken coming to feed in their hand, became the chosen ones! 👑

Last Saturday was a celebration. Our annual fundraiser and gala The Storied Trail was everything we could have hoped for and more. 🥳

While we honored the journey of our school so far, our eyes were firmly set on the future. Everyone who participated through their generosity helped light the way forward and contributed towards securing a Waldorf education for generations of students to come. ✨

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, our donors, our development committee, and every single person who contributed to making this event such a success. 🙏

Thank you. 💜

Tomorrow, we will gather in reverence to those who have shaped the journey that brought us here as a school.

At the same time, we will light the way forward for those who follow. ✨

The Storied Trail is an evening dedicated to sustaining Austin Waldorf School as a balanced, accessible community that offers the full depth of Waldorf education to ALL of our families.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has already poured so much time, energy, resources and infinite care into bringing this remarkable event to life.

We see you. We appreciate you. Thank you. 💜

What happens when you entrust farm work to Waldorf students? They create an improved technique using their finger knitting skills! 😄

Each spring, our high schoolers have their Work Experience Week. This tradition is a meaningful opportunity for them to gain practical experience in the “real world”.

As part of this program, our 9th graders focused on farms. The farmer at Hope Full Farm tasked them with bundling long pieces of fabric and was delighted about their creative solution! 🧶

Our high school students worked at many different work places across Austin, some even on our own campus, helping out in Kindergarten or with our facilities team. Some of our seniors didn’t stay that close: they traveled all the way to the Dominican Republic with TECHO to build three houses for local families! 🏘️

The High School Work Experience program helps students in so many ways: it provides them with the opportunity to learn and develop life skills, it enhances their self-esteem and confidence, and it helps them relate their curricular experiences to the working world, among other things. 🌟

Things got very… colorful! 🫟

On the day before Spring Break, our Kindergarten kids got the opportunity to celebrate Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, Love and Spring! 🌿

At Austin Waldorf School, we have a rich festival life, honoring celebrations from across cultures and traditions. These events help the children connect more deeply to each other and to the shared human experience. It is one of the things parents love most about our school! 💓

With many thanks to the parents who helped make this happen and shared this wonderful part of their culture with us. 🙏

And the kids? They had a blast! 🎉

The gift of giving! ✨

Our second graders stepped into the rich Waldorf tradition and brought the spirit of Santa Lucia to life. After learning about saints throughout their semester, they now got to fully engage with the story of Santa Lucia, known for her devotion to helping others.

All dressed in white with red sashes, one child wearing a wreath topped with four candles, they visited the Kindergarten and Grades classrooms, singing beautiful songs and handing out cookies they baked themselves the day before. 🍪

It was a beautiful moment shared with their fellow students! 💜
