Austin Waldorf School

Austin Waldorf School An independent preK-12 school, nurturing, inspiring and engaging students since 1980.

Waldorf Education, founded in 1919 by the Austrian philosopher, scientist, and artist Rudolf Steiner, has grown into an educational movement with over 900 independent schools in 55 countries. Fundamental to Waldorf Education is the recognition that each human being is a unique individual who passes through distinct life stages and that it is the responsibility of education to address the physical,

social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of each developmental stage. The school's guiding values are a life-long love of learning, creative thinking and self-confidence, a sympathetic interest in the world and the lives of others, and an abiding sense of moral purpose. By creating a school environment that balances academic, artistic, and practical disciplines, as well as providing daily opportunities for both group and individual learning, Austin Waldorf School cultivates the faculties that allow our students to develop these qualities. Learning in a Waldorf school is an imaginative, enlivening, and creative process. The common thread in every subject is the artistic element - art, music, drama, storytelling, poetry, and crafts are woven into the curriculum. Our students learn with more than their heads; they learn with their heads, hearts, and hands.

Our campus needs a bit of work before the start of the school year.🌿

This Sunday, August 9, we are rallying our community on campus for a Community Workday! 🛠️

Between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., join us and our facilities team in trimming walkways and ground cover, blowing leaves, preparing classrooms, and more. 🍃

You'll get to meet or reconnect with other parents, earn volunteer hours, and help make our campus safe and clean for our students! 💜

Some more main lesson book sample pages, this time from our first graders! 😍

Creating these main lesson books makes learning language arts and mathematics more visible and meaningful to our students. It is just one of many things that makes a Waldorf education truly special. ✨

When art supports learning and learning becomes art 🎨

In Waldorf education, students record and consolidate what they learned in a focused block of study, called 'main lesson', in a main lesson book.

Why?

📚Through this intensive work, students better retain the subject matter over time.
📚 Through creating their own writing and illustrations, learning becomes more visible and meaningful.
📚 The main lesson book becomes the tangible fruit of a main lesson block.
📚 Students get to engage deeply and artistically with the subject matter, rather than rushing through a fragmented coverage of it.

We're happy to share a few delightful pages of our high school students' main lesson books from the past few months! 🍀

This event had parents passing tissues around!

On the last day of school, our first graders graciously sent off our twelfth graders on their journey beyond Austin Waldorf School. It was the beloved Rose Ceremony, Part Two.

Part One happened in August, when the twelfth graders welcomed the brand-new first graders at the start of their journey through the grades.

In August, the seniors handed the first graders a rose, and this time, it was the other way around. 🌹

Seeing each of our 34 seniors walk across the stage hand in hand with their first-grade buddy was just the loveliest of sights. No wonder it is one of the most beloved Waldorf traditions.

Raise your sunflower if you're a rising first grader! 🌻

For some of our Kindergarten children, the last day of school was a very special one. During the traditional Sunflower Ceremony, they celebrated their passage from Kindergarten into the grades by crossing the symbolic wooden bridge.

These children have grown so much during their time in our Waldorf kindergarten and it will be a delight to see them assume their new roles as freshly minted first graders when the new school year arrives. ✨

But first, they will enjoy a well-deserved summer break! 🍀

✨ We proudly present: our class of 2026! ✨

Each and every one of these 34 students - our largest graduating class ever! - has come to the end of their journey at our school and become exactly who they were meant to be.

This is also the beginning of a new journey. Their Waldorf education has equipped them with a wide range of skills, knowledge, and experiences, giving each of them what they need to take the next step in their lives.

Whether they are taking a gap year or pursuing studies in engineering, business, international relations, communications, psychology, and many other fields, they are headed toward exciting futures at institutions such as UT Austin, Durham University (UK), the University of Navarra (Spain), the University of California, Davis, and Texas State University.

It is profoundly hopeful to see these remarkable young adults walk into the world with purpose, knowing they will bring compassion, care and a human touch to everything they do.

We are so proud of them, and while we will sorely miss them in our high school, we wish each of them the very best in their journey beyond AWS!

This morning, our Head of School, Dr. Michelle Purghart, cut the ribbon for our new campus building! 🎀

Flanked by Site Committee Chair Branson Fustes and incoming Board of Trustees president Temaria Davis, Dr. Purghart officially unveiled the new building for our entire school community. ✨

This is the first new permanent construction on campus in more than 20 years and will be home to practical arts and science & technology classes. The additional restroom facilities will also be appreciated by everyone on campus! 😄

This wonderful building was designed by Andersson Wise Architects, while the landscaping is by Word + Carr.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life and look forward to all the learning, creativity, and discovery this new space will hold for generations of students to come. 🙏

Did you know making paper was this simple?

Let our 5th graders teach you! 😄

In their handwork class, the students learned about protecting the environment and sustainability. To put their learnings into practice, they collected all the paper scraps on campus they could find, and with the help of our handwork teacher Ms. Black, they recycled these into lovely little paper envelopes and cards. 💌

Watch until the end to see the result!

This type of hands-on activities is essential for how our children acquire knowledge. Research shows that experiential learning is how students learn best across all ages and all subject areas. 📈

“My child appears to be a chopsticks expert!”

One of our kindergarten moms could not believe her eyes when she brought her child to an Asian restaurant with her: he had absolutely no problems using chopsticks. 🍜

Little did she know that he had been practicing every Wednesday! In our Moongarden, that is rice day. The children enjoy their brown rice with seaweed, cucumber, sesame seed and soy sauce. Their favorite part though? Using chopsticks! Needless to say, they have become very proficient at it over the course of the year. 🍚
