Not unlike other professions which involve supporting families through critical moments in life, experience and training also can make a significant difference in college counseling.
Many parents are surprised to learn how much the college admissions landscape has changed over the last two decades. Students today are navigating holistic review, shifting testing policies, supplemental essays, merit scholarships, honors programs, demonstrated interest, and increasingly competitive applicant pools at many colleges and universities.
Effective college counseling requires more advanced skills than simply creating a college list or reviewing applications. Understanding adolescent development, academic planning, executive functioning, college admissions trends, financial considerations, student fit, and how to guide students through a process that can feel overwhelming for many families all contribute to empowering students to successfully navigate this process.
With 24 years of experience in college counseling and admissions, College Counselor and CEO Yvonne Espinoza, CEP, has worked with students in both public schools and private practice. She also remains actively involved in national leadership and professional development within the college counseling profession through conference presentations, advisory roles, and professional organizations.
Families who work with Yvonne understand that experienced counselors are often better equipped to recognize problems before they arise, provide helpful, individualized perspective to both students and parents, and provide students with the skills to make intentional decisions about their future.

College visits can play an important role in helping students better understand what a college may actually feel like outside of rankings or other opinions. Even if friends or family loved a college, the student is the one who will ultimately build a life there for four years.
Visiting campus gives students the opportunity to experience the culture firsthand. Does the environment feel collaborative, competitive, spirited, relaxed, etc.? Those factors matter more than many families initially realize. How do students spend their free time when they aren’t in class? Is the campus more residential or commuter?
It is also important to look beyond the aesthetics of a campus. Beautiful dorms and impressive landscaping can absolutely enhance the college experience, but they should not be the only focus during a visit.
Students should spend time learning about the academic department connected to their intended area of study. Is the department growing? Are students discussing research, internships, study-abroad, or strong relationships with faculty? Is the university investing in updated labs, technology, equipment, or facilities? Academic opportunities and institutional investment can significantly shape a student’s experience which translate to graduate school admissions or employment after graduating.
College Counselor and CEO, Yvonne Espinoza, CEP, prepares her students to approach college visits with intention and an understanding of their priorities so they can better understand both the environment and the academic opportunities available to them.

For many parents, the college admissions process looks very different from when they applied to college.
Today’s students are navigating a far more complex landscape that may include Early Action and Early Decision plans, holistic admissions review, supplemental essays, demonstrated interest, honors colleges, merit scholarship strategy, changing testing policies, and increasingly competitive applicant pools at many institutions. Students are also often expected to make important decisions about academic interests, activities, leadership, and summer planning well before senior year begins.
College planning describes the long-term process of helping students better understand themselves, identify college environments where they are most likely to thrive, and make informed academic and personal decisions throughout high school.
With 24 years of experience in college counseling and admissions, College Counselor and CEO Yvonne Espinoza, CEP, helps families navigate this evolving process through highly individualized guidance and comprehensive support. Known nationally for her leadership and expertise within the college counseling profession, Yvonne works closely with students and families to reduce stress and help students navigate the process with greater confidence and self-awareness.

College application essays support involves more than editing grammar or “polishing” sentences. Strong essays are a result of students who better understand themselves and the qualities that make them unique.
College Counselor and CEO, Yvonne Espinoza, spends significant time getting to know her students so she can help guide them through that process of reflection and self-awareness. In her work with students, the student remains the star of the show. The goal is never to manufacture a voice or tell students who they should be, but rather to help them better recognize and communicate their own strengths and lived experiences authentically.
With 24 years of experience in college counselin, Yvonne provides college essay support through both hourly services and Academic Year Contracts. For many students, beginning essay work during the summer can significantly reduce stress during senior year and allow more time for writing and revision before application deadlines arrive.
Students applying to larger numbers of colleges, highly selective institutions, or schools with extensive supplemental essays often benefit from more comprehensive, individualized support throughout the process. A limited number of Senior Academic Year Contracts are still available.

Academic Year Contracts for the 2026–2027 school year officially open June 15th for students in the 9th - 12th grades.
For rising seniors, the summer before senior year has become an important period in the college admissions process. Many colleges now open applications on or before August 1st, and for some institutions, students who apply earlier in the cycle may benefit from increased availability in admissions spaces, merit scholarships, etc.
Submitting a strong application can be time intensive. Multiple application platforms, personal statements, supplemental essays, and resumes can be easier to focus on without the courseload and commitments of senior year.
College Counselor and CEO, Yvonne Espinoza, CEP, works with a very limited number of seniors each year to provide highly individualized support throughout the application process. A nationally recognized college counselor with more than 24 years of experience in college counseling and admissions, Yvonne is known for her caring, student-centered approach and extensive professional expertise within the college admissions field.
Academic Year Contracts are designed to provide students and families with ongoing one-on-one guidance and continued support throughout the school year.

Choosing a college major to explore can feel overwhelming for many high school students, especially when they are still becoming self-aware and have only had exposure to subjects taught in high school.
The Strong Interest Inventory is designed to help students better understand how their interests, and values may connect to possible career paths and academic majors. The Strong explores patterns in what students are naturally drawn to and how those interests compare to people working in different professions.
As part of the Strong Interest Inventory Service, students complete the assessment independently and then meet one-on-one with Yvonne Espinoza, CEP, for a 1-hour interpretation session. As a college counselor who is trained and licensed to provide the Strong, Yvonne helps students understand their results, identify themes and possible areas of interest, and begin exploring how those interests may connect to future college and career options.
For many students, the process makes exploration fun and gives them a starting point for future exploration.

College Counselor & CEO recently went on a campus tour at the Northeastern University - Oakland Counselor Fly-in. This absolutely gorgeous campus is housed on the former Mills College Campus. In contrast to the Boston campus, this campus gives West coast vibes with some Spanish colonial revival architecture and perfect weather. NU Oakland also has a gated campus to ensure student safety.
Through the shuttle system, students have access to the Bay Area experience. Free shuttles travel to places like Berkeley and nearby grocery stores. Cool perk- students also have a section at the UC Berkeley football games.
The campus felt very safe and peaceful, and would be a great place for students who wanted to start their freshman year in an environment that made the transition to college extremely nurturing and welcoming.
