Sanchez Elementary is located close to downtown on Austin’s east side. The school, built in 1976, boasts exquisite murals by Raul Valdez, depicting the school's Hispanic history and heritage. The campus is the open classroom design popular for schools built at that time. The school’s library is rich in literature and cultural artifacts which chronicle Sanchez's place in the east Austin community.

Sanchez was one of the district’s first to introduce two-way dual language education, which is appropriate because the school's namesake, George Sanchez, was a pioneer in bilingual education.
