A New Psi Games Mind Sight Mask Standard Has Been Established.
The goal of the Psi Games is that as every year progresses we see progress in our standards. Two years ago when we started, we could never have imagined where we are today. One area where we have made significant progress is in the Mind Sight Challenge. The progress has been so remarkable that we have decided to advance to the next level of the Mind Sight Challenge by using a higher quality mask. As mentioned, we expected that as the perceptualists grow in their ability, so shall the standards. We are happy to report that we have observed this growth, which has led us to make this change and announce it early to ensure that perceptualists have ample time to practice and hone their skills. From now on our official visual-occlusion standard for Mind Sight competitions will be the use of the Goalfix Eclipse as the standard competition mask for all perceptualists.
Why Goalfix Eclipse?:
The Goalfix Eclipse was selected for its design that allows for significant visual blocking, contoured coverage around the eyes and nose, extended facial coverage, and a secure, snug-fitting design. These features help to eliminate the small gaps that can occur with traditional blindfolds, which may allow light to enter, enable downward viewing, or permit peripheral vision.
This approach is informed by the International Blind Sport Standard:
The visual-occlusion principles used in IBSA Blind Football have inspired our approach. International blind football employs standardized visual-blocking equipment to create a level playing field for athletes with varying degrees of residual vision.
Psi Games is applying that same fundamental principle: if the integrity of a competition depends on getting rid of ordinary vision, then visual occlusion should be standardized and controlled. This has been our goal every year; however, having a mask that is also standard for other official organizations worldwide is a greater step on this path.
Psi Games is unaffiliated with or endorsed by IBSA. We are embracing the proven methods of international blind sport, which serve as a valuable template to improve the fairness and integrity of our own MindSight competitions.
What This Policy Means for Perceptualists:
All perceptualists must wear the official Goalfix Eclipse mask provided by the Psi Games organization and not their own masks or blindfolds (however, it is advised to train with this type of mask in preparation). Before each competition a Psi Games official will inspect the mask and properly fit it and check around the eyes, nose, sides, top, and bottom to make sure there is no obvious pathway for ordinary vision.
Once a challenge has begun, perceptualists shall not intentionally alter the mask by lifting, loosening, repositioning, or otherwise. If a mask is inadvertently displaced, an official may halt the challenge, readjust the mask, and verify the visual seal before proceeding.
Future Mask Standards:
“The Goalfix Eclipse is our standard going forward, but Psi Games knows that equipment and technology will continue to get better. We may have a different mask in the future—but only if testing shows it to be at least as effective as this new Psi Games standard.
Any potential future mask will completely block vision with no way to see forward, to the sides, down, up, or through the nose; have strong features to prevent peeking around the eyes, nose, and cheeks; stay in place while moving; be safe and comfortable; last a long time; be easy to clean and take care of; and be the same from one mask to another.
