What did RootzGround & WingzFly do last Saturday? We facilitated workshops for local youth in Waco, Texas about sustainability in agrifood 💚! We taught them how to use recyclable materials that might otherwise be discarded, to create a largely self-sustaining irrigation system 💧. We also used household recyclable materials to teach about composting and seed germination 🌱🪴. Each learner left with the start of an organic fruit and vegetable garden 🧑🏾‍🌾🧑🏼‍🌾🧑🏿‍🌾👩🏾‍🌾🧑🏻‍🌾! A huge thanks to our Board member LaMarriol Smith for helping co-facilitate three amazing workshops at the Future Innovators Conference at the Bledsoe-Miller STEAM Center in Waco, TX!

We had a blast at the Future Innovators Conference on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the Bledsoe-Miller STEAM Center in Waco, Tx! Thanks to the exceptional coordination of Ms. Chisa Brigham, M.Ed., of the McLennan/ Falls County

Prairie View A&M Extension Program, local community members, and the other amazing women leaders in STEM, RootzGround & WingzFly provided highly engaging workshops to roughly 75 youths and their families! It was a fabulous day of high engagement, learning workshops, and fun!

Where will RootzGround & WingzFly be on Saturday, August 29th? We’ll be HAPPY in WACO, Texas engaging youths on the topic of agrifood systems with fun-filled activities. Central Texas youth will have the opportunity to learn directly from accomplished women leaders in science, technology, engineering, agriculture, and medicine
during the inaugural Future Innovators Conference on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Hosted by the Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program in partnership with the Bledsoe-Miller STEAM Center, the free conference is designed for youth ages 8–19 and will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Waco.
Every featured workshop will be led by an accomplished woman who is a leader in her respective STEAM field, giving participants the opportunity to learn from professionals who are solving real-
world challenges while inspiring the next generation of innovators. Through engaging, hands-on experiences like Animal Science, or Beauty & Cosmetic Chemistry, youth will explore careers, ask questions, and discover how their interests can grow into careers that strengthen their communities.

Brother James Baldwin, Harlem born and raised, you are one of our Native Sons. We celebrate your life and the literary gems you’ve left for us to follow like breadcrumbs that lead to the promise of truth. You could not be contained in a single lifetime, much less Giovanni’s Room, because you were and still ARE bigger than imagination. Like a philosophical prophet, you prepared us for the Fire Next Time, even with The Evidence of Things Unseen. And that fire is here, burning violently as it sweeps across the Amen Corner(s) of this nation, leaving burning embers that smolder like Blues for Mister Charlie and heartache for anybody human enough to care, because grief looms heavy. If Beale Street Could Talk, it’d tell you the cruelty of humanity in these cold streets. Oh yes…The Devil Finds Work in our streets- snatching lives like anybody is a No Name in the Street- making people faceless, story-less, and nameless, as if Nobody Knows My Name or his or hers or theirs, so victims are easier to forget. And so many remain silent, belligerently unmoved- telling themselves radical change and healing isn’t our responsibility because that’s for Another Country to manage. Yet, hope dares to exist because your legacy is a blueprint, we’ve got the Notes of a Native Son. So, for those of us so moved to act, we will Go Tell It on the Mountain or tell it to someone, anyone who dares to dream for a different day. Our communities are weathering extraordinary storms. So many young people are doing their best to navigate societal expectations and precarious systems amidst uncertainty. They are fighting for visibility and seeking affirmation in a world where identity feels largely defined by external validation. And through it all, still hoping to somehow stay connected to self. Well, on August 6th from 3-8pm, we are partnering with We Can’t Breathe, Inc. to help silence the distractions, identify the gifts within, and find the beauty in a world that doesn’t always feel safe. We will nurture the spirit, tap into whimsy, and restore with a sense of purpose, so our young people can breathe a bit easier 🙏🏾.

It’s small business owners that provide the heartbeat of a community. It’s the folks who live, work, patron, and build there that give it life. The folks who know your preferred order, recognize your face or call you by name. It’s the people who make you feel seen because they know you; they respect where you come from and take pride in the community that they call home. Simply, they are you. Thanks to Harlem Commonwealth Council for facilitating this thought partnership between NYC’s first-ever Mom and Pop Czar Delia Awusi and local small business owners around challenges that impact their success. We ideated sustainable solutions and committed to supporting one another. We want to see our local, small businesses thrive, because they are the lifeblood of our communities. They take care of our needs and also, require our support to keep their doors open. So, let’s please support one of our favorite local businesses in Harlem Sister’s Uptown Bookstore and Cultural Center by purchasing a ticket to their inaugural Voices of Harlem Gala taking place on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at Riverside Church. When we show up for one another, we can defeat any odds stacked against us!
