Dear Westlake Latin Club Online Community,
We are thrilled to share some news that shines a spotlight on the dedication, talent, and hard work of our Latin students. This year, over 100,000 students across all 50 states and 26 countries—including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Korea, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom—participated in this prestigious competition. The exam itself covers Latin grammar and vocabulary, ancient history, Greek and Roman mythology, ancient geography, classical art and architecture, and Roman daily life.
The results of the 2024 National Latin Exam are in, and we are thrilled to announce that 67% of Westlake High School's participants have won an award on the National Latin Exam! To win an award, students had to score above-average on their level of the exam and to earn a certificate of merit, students had to score at the international average for their level, a feat that highlights not just their intellectual ability but also their commitment to and passion for learning. Please see the linked PDF for the individual awards and a partial-group photo.
Please join us in congratulating all of our students on their outstanding progress and achievements. We hope they are as incredibly proud of what they have accomplished this year as we are. Thank you to our parents, colleagues, and administrators for your continued support and encouragement of our students. We are grateful for your commitment to fostering a love of learning and academic excellence at our school.
Have a great Teacher Appreciation week, omnes!
Valete,
The Magistri (Alan Abbe & Natalie Cannon)

We are delighted to share the achievements of our students at this year's State Latin Convention, a vibrant and intellectually enriching gathering hosted by the student officers of the Texas State Junior Classical League (JCL) and by St. Andrew’s and Anderson High School this year.
Each year, the State Latin Convention brings together students from all across the state to compete in a variety of events that showcase their talents in the Latin language, classical civilization, mythology, art, athletics, and much more. This multi-day event is filled with competitions, workshops, and activities that allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, while also bonding with peers who share their passion for the classics.
Westlake’s Latin students have once again made us proud by displaying their depth of knowledge, commitment, and enthusiasm. They have not only excelled academically but have also embodied the spirit of camaraderie and scholarly pursuit that the JCL promotes. We are thrilled to share that the cumulative total of their awards resulted in Westlake winning another 2nd Place Sweepstakes trophy!
Attached, please find highlights from the convention and a listing of the outstanding accomplishments of our kids:

On February 23 and 24, our very own Kendan Abbe hosted the regional Area F Convention for 378 students here at Westlake High School for a Junior Classical League (Latin) Convention. Kendan coordinated the volunteers, catering, and event program, and he hosted a crew of amazing WHS students and parent volunteers to enable art contests, athletic contests, vocal solo & ensemble contests, spoken language contests, play contests, costume contests, and written contests for all of the public and private schools in our region.
Special thanks to the adults who helped make it happen- Mrs. Yanchak helped judge the play contest, Mr. Bartlett helped run our outdoor Olympika contests, Mrs. Cannon worked in the grading room, and Mr. Abbe supported Kendan through his state officer and host duties and coached the Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced Certamen teams.
Be sure to congratulate these kids when you see them. I know we're used to Westlake being exceptional, but it really takes a lot of hard work and dedication to host an event AND bring home the wins at it as well. Many of our kids had to do Early Testing at 6:15am on Saturday so that they could do their host-duties and/or hurry off to other events on campus or in town. I just don't think I can say enough about how awesome these guys are, but you teach them too, so I'm preaching to the choir. Up next, ...State!

On July 22, fourteen high school Latin students flew to Atlanta, Georgia, to spend a fun and spirit-filled week of competition at the National Junior Classical League Convention at Emory University.
A variety of academic tests challenged their knowledge in such subjects as Latin Grammar, Mythology, Roman History, and many more
A few students also opted to compete in performance contests such as Dramatic Interpretation and Latin Oratory, while others took part in easy writing, art and athletic contests.
The Texas Intermediate Certamen team won 1st place in the nation, the first National Championship for a team consisting mostly of Westlake students. Vaibhavi Addala, Mason Fuller, and Claire Rozek made up half of that team, while a student from Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy and two students from Klein Collins High School in Houston made up the other half.

Maximas gratias vobis ago, Melisande Santos and Courtney Herring for hosting a fabulous TSJCL convention at Marcus High School!! It was a looong weekend (10 hours of sleep + 20,029 steps in a 48 hour period), but it was also wonderful.
Westlake High School’s 54 Latin students earned 2nd place Academic Sweepstakes in the Purple Division (17 schools with 50+ attending) along with many awards for art, athletics, and creative performance contests. I am so impressed by these kids’ hearts, initiative, intelligence, talent, and tenacity.
