What does a reader have to be able to do to make sense of this paragraph? What do they have to know? The short answer is a LOT!

First, the reader has to be able to decode the words. They also have to know a lot about what words mean in this context. This is not the nose you use Kleenex for! And we're not talking about diving in a pool, though that could definitely help you with how dive is being used here.

And what about all those commas? Oooo----eeee!

Readers have to be able to do a lot to make meaning out of strings of letters on a page, and it is the most wonderful experience to help them do it!

Middle schools dismiss their students later, so my later time spots are all full.
