It’s World Tapas Day! ✨🫒

Tapas are an integral part of Spanish culture! In many parts of Spain, Tapas have evolved into a whole cuisine… they can make up an entire meal and a different way of eating and socializing with family and friends. There are entire streets devoted to the cuisine in some cities, and in other cities there are enormous markets specialized in these small bite-sized dishes.

In the northern part of Spain, Tapas are often called Pinchos, and in the Basque region and nearby areas their spelling changes to Pintxos (but is pronounced the same). Regardless of what you call them or how you spell them, the varieties of what’s on offer is spellbinding. There is literally something for everyone!

Did you know that all these words came from Arabic?

As you can see, a lot of them start with the syllable ‘Al’, which equates to the Spanish articles “el” and “la”.

Due to the extensive Arabic history in Spain (a mere 780 years!), Arabic vocabulary has made a huge contribution to the Spanish language.

What sayings do you have where you’re from?

Popular sayings are fun… oftentimes they make absolutely no sense... till they do. We think that this Venezuelan proverb is a good example of that.

The story behind it is that goats are very skilled at going forward on narrow hillside paths, but if they start moving backwards they often fall.

This saying is often used by locals when playing dominoes, and someone is about to make their move (or place their piece) and changes their mind at the last minute.

But upon further inspection, this saying turns out to be quite profound. It can be used to encourage someone to have faith and believe in the decision they’ve made, instead of being regretful and fearful about it.
