AHB (Austin Home Base) Community School is a small, secular private school serving kids in kindergarten through 8th grade. They also have time to just be kids!

We offer our community a creative and collaborative educational alternative that cultivates authentic, balanced critical thinkers who are prepared for a life of learning and community engagement The philosophy behind AHB is that education is the pursuit of knowledge; a pursuit which occurs as much outside of the classroom as in it. Our part-time schedule (3-4 days/week) allows students ample time

Meet Ms. Andrea, one of our teachers in Beta (1st/2nd)! πŸ“šβœ¨

Andrea brings a thoughtful, student-centered approach to the classroom and is passionate about building a learning environment rooted in curiosity, cooperation, and confidence. She earned her B.A. in Mass Communications from UC Berkeley and later received her M.A. in Education from the University of San Francisco.

Since beginning her teaching career in San Francisco, Andrea has worked with students in a wide range of educational settings, including public, private, charter, and Title I schools through AmeriCorps. At AHB, she loves helping students grow into engaged learners who ask questions, think deeply, and support one another as a classroom community.

Outside of school, Andrea stays busy with her two energetic daughters and enjoys reading and traveling whenever she gets the chance. πŸŒŽπŸ’›

Did you know more than 20 countries have Spanish as an official language? And that Spanish is one of the fastest-growing languages in the United States? πŸ“ˆ

AND did you know that AHB is adding Spanish 1A for middle school students next year?! πŸ™‚

This is the first step in a larger plan to help AHB students earn a high school Spanish credit before graduating from middle school, preparing them to begin Spanish 2 in high school.

Students will meet twice a week with longtime educator Ms. Amanda Fernandez, and the course will earn official transcript credit, just like Algebra 1.

We’re thrilled to expand language opportunities for our middle school students and can’t wait to launch this new program in the fall! πŸ“š

Meet Kim, our Alpha (kinder) teacher! 🍎✨

Kim has been inspiring young learners for more than 40 years and brings a deep love of creativity, curiosity, and lifelong learning into the classroom every day. She earned her B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin and began her teaching career at Athena Montessori School, one of Austin’s original Montessori preschools.

Over the years, Kim has founded schools, created innovative summer programs, and even written nine volumes of curriculum for a nonprofit focused on healthy childhood development. At AHB, she’s known for creating joyful, engaging learning experiences where students can sing along as she plays guitar, create, explore, and grow with confidence.

When she’s not teaching, Kim enjoys spending time with her five sons, who continue to inspire her belief that learning never stops. πŸ’›

AHB Middle School's Stock Market Game participants finished up a great season! πŸ“ˆ

The Stock Market Game is an immersive simulation that challenges students to manage a virtual $100,000 portfolio throughout the school year by researching and investing in real-time global markets. By analyzing economic trends and corporate performance, students gain a practical understanding of financial literacy and current events. πŸ—ž

Congratulations to our top SMG team, who placed 3rd in the region out of 103 teams! They had a net equity gain of 12.344%, meaning they ended the game with $112,344.30. They had 6.9% return above the S&P 500 growth. πŸ’°

Congrats to all participants for their hard work this year, and a special thanks to Ms. Amanda who coaches these teams during her weekly lunch club.

Way to represent AHB! πŸ™Œ

Epsilon Update! πŸ“° (7th/8th)

πŸ“š ELA

Students continued their study of 2001: A Space Odyssey, analyzing themes like technology, intelligence, and the relationship between humans and machines. They compared key scenes from the novel with clips from the film, discussing how storytelling changes across mediums. Journal reflections on HAL 9000 pushed students to think critically about ethics, responsibility, and artificial intelligence.

βž• Math

Epsilon 1 wrapped up their probability unit with dependent events, followed by review and assessment.

Epsilon 2 focused on writing equations for trend lines and analyzing data using mean absolute deviation.

Algebra students worked on choosing the best methods for solving quadratics, applying them to real-world problems, and exploring quadratic regression. They’ve now completed their curriculum and are preparing for upcoming assessments.

🌎 Theme (Social Studies & Science)

Students explored the solar system through research, illustration, and hands-on modeling. Each group investigated a different object in the solar system and created scaled representations to show the vast distances between planets. By calculating and mapping these distances, students gained a clearer understanding of the size and spacing of our solar system.

Nice job, Epsilons! ✨
