AHB Community School AHB (Austin Home Base) Community School is a small, secular private school serving kids in kindergarten through 8th grade. They also have time to just be kids!

We offer our community a creative and collaborative educational alternative that cultivates authentic, balanced critical thinkers who are prepared for a life of learning and community engagement The philosophy behind AHB is that education is the pursuit of knowledge; a pursuit which occurs as much outside of the classroom as in it. Gamma (3rd/4th) Update!

Our Gammas have jumped right into the new school year with plenty of hands-on learning!

➗ Math: Both Gamma classes have discussed the importance of math in our everyday lives and collaborated to solve some fun thinking problems. And our first big math concept of the year is... place value!

📚 ELA: Gammas have reviewed nouns, adjectives, and verbs with Mad Libs, and have practiced identifying the elements of a story’s plot using “plot mountains.” They've also created triple Venn diagrams in groups to learn more about their new classmates and discover all the things they have in common.

🌎 Theme: The Gammas kicked off their first Theme of the year (American heroes) by exploring what it means to be a hero. They've discussed how courage, kindness, and everyday choices can make a difference ... and how heroes don’t necessarily wear capes! Students have also started their theme projects at home, but we'll save that big reveal for later in the quarter! 😉

With traditional school schedules, it can be difficult to carve out family time.

So we offer a part-time schedule and Fridays off so families can enrich their lives based on individual interests and needs.

Yet we still cover the major school subjects in line with TEKS (Texas standards for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level).

Our youngest AHB students are officially settling into kindergarten, and there’s so much ahead for them this year!

Kindergarten is a year full of amazing growth and milestones: new friendships, new routines, and new discoveries.

We can’t wait to watch our Alphas become more confident and independent as they explore their new school community and discover just how much fun learning can be.

"I went to science fair and had some of the most fun conversations with the middle schoolers. I left feeling giddy seeing how happy those kids are to learn. Everyone I talked to was articulate, passionate and thoughtful about their project.

I want to congratulate you and the teachers on jobs well done guiding these young kids and thank you all for creating this space where kids feel nurtured and respected so their brains are wide open for learning. We’re honored to be a part of this community!"

🌎 What Does Social Studies Look Like in Epsilon (7th/8th)? 🌎

To illustrate, here's a recap of last year's study of industrialization and immigration in the United States! Epsilon students explored how the Industrial Revolution transformed American society and how immigration helped shape the nation's economy and culture. To better understand life before industrialization, students experienced a mapping activity using 19th-century tools like candles and quill pens, then compared it to working with modern classroom materials and today's technology. They also performed skits that illustrated everyday life in Pre-Industrial America, including cottage industries and subsistence farming.

As the unit continued, students traced the immigration experience by creating maps of New York City's ethnic neighborhoods, designing travel containers for project artifacts, and examining how immigration influenced the Progressive Era, labor laws, and women's rights.

The study concluded with presentations from two AHB parents who shared their own journeys through the U.S. naturalization process, giving students the opportunity to connect the historical themes they had studied with the experiences of modern immigrants.

Through this study, students gained a deeper understanding of how industrialization and immigration shaped the United States and continue to influence American society today. ✨

This is what makes AHB so magical... 💫

It is a community that strives to value ALL our community stakeholders: students, teachers, and families. (And it’s one more way to teach our students that they are part of something bigger than themselves!)

By honoring all parts of the system, we build a better school. Our campus is filled not only with happy kids, but also teachers excited to be learning alongside their students, kids who smile and laugh their way through the days, and families who consider the school community a place of belonging for themselves as well as their children.

This interconnectedness is the heart of our community: students who love learning, teachers who love teaching, and families who thrive. At AHB, we are all part of the learning journey. 💙🤎💚

🌍 What Does Social Studies Look Like in Delta (5th/6th)? 🌍

Well, during last year's study of geography and world cultures, Deltas investigated each continent through research, mapping, collaboration, and creative projects. During their stop in Africa, students worked in teams to explore countries from each region of the continent, organizing what they learned using the Five Themes of Geography.

Students also completed mapping activities to better understand Africa's physical features before creating artifacts to demonstrate their new knowledge. Finally, each group wrote and recorded a mini podcast sharing their favorite discoveries, which became part of a final project through an audio QR code.

Through this study, students developed a deeper understanding of world geography while discovering the diverse cultures, landscapes, and traditions that make each region unique. ✨
