Meet Yefferson Ospina, an ABD doctoral candidate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Every summer, LLILAS provides generous research funding to graduate students from diverse disciplines and departments across campus. We've invited them to share their stories in this ongoing series. Last summer, Yefferson was awarded the E.D. Farmer Fellowship, which supported a research stay in Mexico.
"My research focuses on contemporary Gothic literature in Mexico and Colombia," writes Yefferson. "Thanks to this fellowship, I was able to conduct interviews with several prominent authors of Mexican Gothic fiction, as well as scholars working on related topics. Among the authors I interviewed were Jorge Comensal, David Fajardo Chica, and Abraham Sapién. During this research trip, I also visited exhibitions addressing violence and forced disappearances in Mexico and conducted archival research at the Revista de la Universidad de México. These experiences significantly enriched my understanding of contemporary Mexican Gothic literature and its relationship to broader social and cultural issues."
