Senior Speech season is officially underway at the Ann Richards School, and Amileth L. got us started Monday morning as the first Class of 2027 Star to take the microphone at all-school assembly.

Amileth shared a personal story about having her name mispronounced and how she sometimes hesitated to correct people because she did not want to be a bother. But as she talked about her future goals and her dream of one day becoming a Congresswoman or Governor, she realized that making a difference means being willing to speak up.

“If I want to make a difference, I can’t be afraid to take up space.”

She took that simple idea and turned it into a bigger message for her fellow Stars. We all take up space, she reminded them, and we all have a choice in how we use our voices and our presence to make a difference.

With a little humor, a lot of heart, and an ambitious vision for the future, Amileth gave her fellow Stars plenty to think about as senior speech season gets started.

Our friends at Photo Texas Photography were on campus last week for class photos, and our seniors took advantage of the opportunity. Each year, the senior tradition is to dress up and add fun accessories, and the Class of 2027 chose a princess theme. Our seniors will be taking their formal senior portraits later this year with the more traditional graduate look. Thank you, Photo Texas, for helping our senior Stars carry on their fun tradition!

Today, we honor the birthday of Governor Ann Richards, our school’s namesake and a trailblazer whose leadership and commitment to opportunity continue to inspire generations of young women.

Her belief in the power of education and the importance of giving young women a voice lives on through our Stars. Today, more than 1,200 Ann Richards School alumni are carrying that legacy forward in colleges, careers, and communities across the country.

From first-generation college graduates to STEM professionals and community leaders, our alumni are making their mark and creating opportunities for others along the way.

That is Ann’s legacy in action, and we are proud to carry it forward.

Last night, KVUE shared the remarkable story of Ann Richards School Class of 2016 graduate Isabela P. and her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview Dolly Parton for the Ann Richards School Foundation’s 2016 Reach for the Stars gala.

As we continue to mourn the loss of Dolly, we are especially grateful to revisit this unforgettable connection and hear how her conversation with Isabela has remained meaningful for the past 10 years.

Today, we join the millions of people mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, a beloved artist, philanthropist, and champion for dreamers everywhere.

Dolly’s legacy will live on in her music, her generosity, and the countless lives she inspired to dream big. In 2016, Ann Richards School Class of 2016 graduate Isabela S. had the opportunity to interview Dolly for our Reach for the Stars gala, a conversation we are honored to remember and share today through the link in the comments.

It is one of our favorite senior traditions! Last Friday, our Class of 2027 seniors received their very own yard signs, thanks to the Ann Richards School PTSA.

Be sure to keep an eye out across Austin. You might spot some senior pride in full display as our Stars celebrate their final year at ARS.

On Tuesday, Central Market South Austin provided our Star faculty and staff with a pasta dinner, salad, and garlic bread to start the school year. Each year, they treat us, and we are VERY thankful for the delicious dinner — one less thing to worry about during a busy week. We so appreciate Central Market for supporting our Star faculty and staff!

The story of Ann Richards now has a dedicated home inside the Ann Richards School Library.

Last spring, three members of the Class of 2026 created the Ann Richards Museum as their senior legacy project, bringing together artifacts, photographs and memorabilia that tell the story of Ann Richards and the history of the school inspired by her legacy.

Last week, their work was honored with a letter of commendation from the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board. A lasting contribution that will help future Stars explore the past, ask questions and carry these stories forward.

We are so proud of Elissa, Blue and Finn for creating something that will continue to inspire generations of Stars to come.
