The Eastside Memorial HS family are enduring a terrible tragedy. Please help them out if you can.

Click here to support Maleeca Smith Funeral by Karrie Mannella Maleeca was so full of life. She was your typical 20 year old college student. Her smile only made you want to smile more. On Sunday April 12, 2015 she was on her way home when a drunk driver ran a red light and hit her car. On that night God was blessed with a new angel. Maleeca's mom and...

“This is a test”: Educating to End the School-to-Grave-Pipeline in Ferguson and Beyond 08/23/2014

"Many black youth have had their caps and gowns snatched from them and replaced with orange jumpsuits, as students are funneled into what is commonly called the “school-to-prison-pipeline”—a series of interlocking policies such as zero tolerance discipline and high suspension rates, overbearing police presence in schools, and high-stakes exit exams required for graduation. But increasingly it appears police are intent on constructing what I guess we now must term the “school-to-grave-pipeline”— a series of interlocking policies such as giving police weapons designed for war zones, the disproportionate policing of areas frequented by black youth, and incentivizing police to shoot black people by not arresting them and giving them paid leave when they do. The school-to-grave-pipeline is not only a problem in Ferguson. Nationally, a study revealed that a black person is killed by police somewhere in the United States every 36 hours."

“This is a test”: Educating to End the School-to-Grave-Pipeline in Ferguson and Beyond “We were at graduation, me and him, and we were talking. He said he wasn’t going to end up like some people on the streets. He was going to get an education.” --Hershel Johnson, a friend Michael Br...

08/14/2014

This Saturday, Aug. 16th, 1 PM - Central Market on N. Lamar - there will be a teach-in, discussion, debrief, etc. for educators to talk about what's happening in Ferguson, MO and the death of Michael Brown.

08/14/2014

Hey folks - just got an email from Young Activists United in STL who are asking for solidarity events for Michael Brown this Saturday at 1 PM. I've been really struggling about how to talk about this with students, how to talk about this with colleagues and administrators, what kinds of activities would be appropriate, how as a teacher of social justice I can educate my students about racism, and the multiple cases of murders of black people by police. Would anyone be interested in meeting this Saturday at 1 PM to have a teach-in?

CHARTER SCHOOL FAIL 07/16/2014

"We know what happened with the unregulated mortgage industry. Well now an unregulated charter school industry is getting billions of dollars of tax payer funds without any oversight. When schools are unregulated you have discrimination against English Language Learners and students with special needs, inflated salaries of school leaders and CEOs, school discipline policies that border on abuse, re-segregation of neighborhood schools and the practice of driving out students who score badly on tests. AND you have all kinds of examples of embezzlement, financial fraud and fiscal mismanagement."

Colonialism, Not Reform: New Orleans Schools Since Katrina • An Interview with Karran Harper Royal 07/12/2014

A great interview with an amazing parent advocate about the takeover of public schools in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Colonialism, Not Reform: New Orleans Schools Since Katrina • An Interview with Karran Harper Royal By next fall, New Orleans will have only five public schools—those operated by the Orleans Parish School Board. Everything else will be charters. The post-Katrina path to almost 100 percent charter education began with the post-storm shutdown of the city’s struggling public schools and the firing (r…
