Scientists and observers agree that elephants have unusually strong long-term memory. Research and field work show they remember the calls, scents and voices of many other elephants for years, and can even recognize familiar humans, such as former zookeepers, more than a decade later.
A famous example involves two Asian elephants, Shirley and Jenny. As a calf, Jenny spent one winter in a circus that also housed Shirley. Decades later, Shirley arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where Jenny already lived. The two elephants reacted with intense excitement and close physical contact, a behavior interpreted as recognition of an old bond. Sanctuary staff later confirmed they had been in the same circus more than twenty years earlier, roughly 23–24 years before their reunion.
