Controversial unpopular opinion:
As a guitar instructor, it is not my job to teach you songs that are current that you can learn on your own. It my job to teach you MUSIC so that you CAN learn ON YOUR OWN. Part and parcel to that is to introduce you to that which you wouldn’t learn or know about if left to your own devices. To seek a teacher is to seek what you are having trouble finding or can’t find on your own.

My 8 year old student Aaron is doing really well on Message in a Bottle by the Police. He started on classical and because he can play Capricho Árabé he can make those 9th stretches on Andy Summers guitar part. While classical guitar is in my mind the best vehicle for technical and musical development, playing pop music is just as essential because it teaches maintaining the groove and keeping track of the arrangement and developing feel.

I started Benjamin 14 years ago on classical guitar as a Suzuki student when he was just shy of 4 years old. In the last 4 years we toggled between classical guitar and popular styles on electric guitar and bass in a more exploratory format. He did an amazing job on this Al Di’Meola tune and I’m fortunate to have gotten a performance with a good audio mix and video documentation. It’s nice to have good music friends who are interested in helping you pull it off. Ben is miles ahead of where I was at his age. If he keeps it up he will be unstoppable. This was a good send off for his next stage, attending civil engineering school in Taiwan.

Ben and I went over to David Druxman’s house this evening to rehearse Midnight Tango. Tonight we were a power trio as John Ponzo is out till next week. It wasn’t bad as a trio. A little thin in places but it worked. Thanks Dave for putting the time into the drums on this one.

So my longest standing student Benjamin and I have been working on Midnight Tango by Al Di’Meola. We did a run through with a backing track courtesy of Michael Ryan in lieu of doing it with a full band. He will be going off to college in August so I want to do something cool before he goes. He had really come a long way. Check it out!

The Behrens Guitar Studio is accepting new students. I teach classical guitar, electric guitar and electric bass. I accept all levels and ages of students. For students 4-8 I offer the Suzuki Method. My old website went down so check this page for real time updates while I get the new website up and running. You can message me on this page or you can find my ad in the Austin Kids Directory for contact info. The best way to get started with me is to come observe a lesson with an existing student to see if we are a good fit. I also teach online Zoom lessons.
