As the sun set on their final day of school last week, we celebrated the incredible journey of our senior class. One of our favorite traditions is gathering together at sunset on the last day to capture this special moment before they begin their next chapter. Over the years, they have grown into confident, talented, and inspiring young adults, and we could not be more proud of all they have accomplished. We wish the Class of 2026 the very best as they take the next steps toward their dreams and future adventures.

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, soak up the sunshine, and dive into a good book 📚 Check out these Summer Reading Tips from Dr Pesta:
Read a Just-Right Book. READ READ READ! Kids should read a "Just Right Book" not too hard, not too easy every day over summer break. To find books that match your child's reading level, try using The Scholastic Book Wizard! The recommendation is 10 minutes for every grade level they have completed. That means students who just finished 3rd grade should read for 30 minutes each day. Kids who finished 1st grade should read for 10 minutes each day and so on. It's great when younger students (K-2nd) read out loud with a grown up to practice reading with fluency (smoothly and with expression) and then talk about their reading. Older elementary students may read independently and talk with a grown-up about what they read.
Make a Summer Reading Journal. Using fun colored pencils or pens, students can keep track of what they've read. They can illustrate what they read, write a summary, or make connections to their lives or other books. Advanced readers can complete a reading journal where they try reading a book from 3 new genres. For example, a student who loves to read fiction might choose to read a poetry book, a biography, and a non-fiction book.
Listen to Audio Books. Traveling this summer? Listening to audiobooks builds excellent vocabulary and comprehension skills! Check an audiobook out on a library app.
Resource Emerging Readers. Emerging Readers (K-2) can learn early reading skills on sites like Starfall, ABCya, and Teach Your Monster to Read.
Go Digital! Kids of all ages can find books to enjoy on Epic! (thousands of digital books), Storyline Online (actors reading stories), Oxford Owl (free eBooks), and ReadWorks (comprehension passages). Try some quality summer reading websites for a little twist on reading fun! We recommend that parents research what is a healthy amount of screen-time for their kids each day (or check with a pediatrician).
Take a Field Trip. To boost excitement about reading, take some field trips to explore different libraries or bookstores around your city. When you get your books home, make a cozy reading fort and enjoy your books.

At Tuesday’s Board Meeting, we were proud to recognize our incredible WATCH D.O.G.S. volunteers for their dedication and support of NYOS Elementary. Throughout the year, these fathers and father-figures have spent time on campus assisting during arrival and dismissal, supporting classrooms, helping with lunch and recess, and building positive connections with students and staff. Their involvement helps strengthen our school community and provides students with meaningful male role models throughout the school day.
Our staff greatly values having WATCH D.O.G.S. on campus. Their presence provides extra support throughout the day, helps build strong relationships with students, and contributes to a positive, welcoming school environment. Students love seeing them involved in their learning, and teachers appreciate the encouragement and partnership they bring to our campus community.
