Department of French & Italian at The University of Texas at Austin The department offers bachelors degrees in French and Italian.

The Department of French and Italian faculty and staff provide and support innovative, high quality teaching responsive to educational needs and interests of students through courses in pedagogy, language teaching, literary criticism, and cultural studies The Department of French and Italian faculty and staff provide and support innovative, high quality teaching responsive to educational needs and interests of students through courses in pedagogy, language teaching, literary criticism, and cultural studies. At the graduate level the department provides subject areas leading to masters and doctors degrees in French and Italian Studies. The French Graduate program offers three tracks: French and Francophone Studies; French Linguistics; Romance Linguistics. Graduate courses in Italian support graduate degrees in other departments and cross-disciplinary offerings. Offices are located in Homer Rainey Hall (HRH) on 21st Street between the Harry Ransom Center and Benedict Hall. The building was originally the UT Music Building and was renamed in honor of former UT President Homer Rainey (1939-1944). The department shares this interesting 1950s Spanish Colonial style building with the Jessen Auditorium, the Hindi Urdu Flagship, and the Texas Language Center.

Did you know that actor and former Longhorn Eman Esfandi, who plays Ezra Bridger in the Star Wars Series Ahsoka and who played Zendaya’s boyfriend in Spiderman: Brand New Day, participated in the Lyon Summer Program in 2016? We’re not saying that the Lyon Summer Program can make you a star, but we’re not saying it can’t! ⭐️ Applications for next summer’s program open Nov. 1! More info on the DEUE website. 🇫🇷

The 2026 Lyon Summer Program went out in style this year combining our traditional host family dinner with a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the program!! What a perfect way to end this year’s program and to commemorate this incredible milestone. Thank you to all of our host families for making our program such a life-changing experience for our students for three decades!! The 2026 Lyon Summer Program had their final weekend excursion to Provence this past weekend! They visited Arles, where they hung out among the Roman ruins and visited a Roman amphitheater from the 1st century BCE! They then spent two amazing nights at the beach in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (including a flamenco dinner) and swimming beneath the Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard! ☀️ 🏊‍♀️ 💃 🍲

The 2026 Lyon Summer Program explored the Croix Rousse neighborhood in Lyon on Wednesday where they learned all about the history of the silk industry in Lyon, including seeing a demonstration on an original Jacquard loom at the Maison des Canuts: Maison des Canuts. They also feasted on pastries from Sébastien Bouillet: before visiting two of the famous murs peints: Le Mur des Canuts and la Fresque des Lyonnais! Next stop the Alps!! 🏔️🌲☀️

What a beautiful day to explore 'la colline qui prie' in Lyon! The 2026 Lyon Summer Program spent the day Wednesday exploring Fourvière starting with a scavenger hunt in Vieux Lyon, followed by a visit to la Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière and a visit to the Musée Gallo-Romain, where students viewed artifacts from Lyon during the Roman Empire and hung out in a Roman théatre dating to the first century!

The first week of classes in Lyon for the 2026 Lyon Summer Program is in the books! Students celebrated with a weekend excursion to the Beaujolais region, which included a visit to the medieval village Oingt, one of Frances "villages des pierres dorées", lunch at the Auberge de Montmelas, and finally a dégustation de vin at the Domaine Frédéric Berne, where they learned all about growing vignes and making wine. 🍷🔆

The Lyon Summer Program continued their whirlwind tour of Paris with visits to the Cathédrale de Notre Dame (to visit les gargouilles), la Sainte Chapelle, l'Arc de Triomphe, le Musée d'Orsay, le Musée Rodin et bien sûr le Louvre! Next stop Lyon!
