I remember a client I worked with years ago who had very little awareness of what was happening inside his body—or even where his body was in space.

In other words, both his interoception and proprioception were limited.

At one point, I gave him a very simple exercise: lie on the floor with his arms out to his sides.
I demonstrated it several times. I explained verbally—and even in writing—that the purpose was to gently create length across his chest, allow more freedom in his breathing, and encourage external rotation at the shoulder joints.

And still, the exercise remained somewhat mysterious to him.

At the time, I didn't understand something I understand much better now:
I was asking him to notice sensations he may not have learned how to notice. I was giving him the exercise, but I wasn't helping him develop the internal awareness that would allow him to experience the exercise differently. This internal awareness is the powerful and often overlooked interoception.

One of the things that has fascinated me throughout my career is how profoundly touch can influence the human experience.

As bodyworkers, we often focus on muscles, fascia, joints, and movement patterns. But beneath all of that lies something even more remarkable: the intimate relationship between touch and the nervous system.

Every time we place our hands on a client, we're doing much more than working with tissue. We're communicating with a system that is constantly gathering information, assessing safety, and shaping how a person experiences their body.

The following passage from Dean Juhan's classic book *Job's Body* beautifully captures this relationship. It's one of my favorite descriptions of why touch matters—and why our work can have such a profound impact.

"The close association between the skin, where touch happens, and the central nervous system could not have more concrete anatomical and physiological connections. Skin and brain develop from exactly the same primitive cells: skin is the outer surface of the brain, where the brain is the deepest layer of the skin.

The close association between the skin, where touch happens, and the central nervous system could not have more concrete anatomical and physiological connections. Skin and brain develop from exactly the same primitive cells: skin is the outer surface of the brain, where the brain is the deepest layer of the skin.

Surface and innermost core spring from the same mother tissue, and throughout the life of the organism, they function as a single unit.

My tactile experience is just as central to my thought processes as language skills or categories of logic. The skin is no more separated from the brain than the surface of a lake is separate from its depths. They are two are different locations in a continuous medium.

Peripheral and central are nearly spatial distinctions, distinctions which do more harm than good, if they lure us into forgetting that the brain is a single functional unit, from cortex to fingertips to toes. To touch the surface is to stir the depth.

Most therapists think they’re working the iliopsoas… but they’re not.

Have you ever wondered if you’re actually on psoas—or just iliacus?

Hi I’m Peggy Lamb, BCTMB and long-time CE provider. For over 20 years, I’ve taught massage therapists across the country how to treat the iliopsoas and quadratus lumborum. After teaching over 1,000 therapists, I’ve seen this mistake again and again.
I’ve seen the confusion—and the ah-ha! moments!

In this free four-video mini course, I’ll show you how to accurately locate and work with both the iliopsoas and quadratus lumborum—so you can stop guessing and start getting real results with your clients.
