Did you know the Deaf have a right to a live interpreter? Using VRI for interpreting services can seem like a good idea but in some cases it's not. The Affordable Care Act and the American's with Disabilities Act both have rules on how to use VRI. First of all, it has to be the CHOICE of your Deaf client/patient. Second, it has to be effective communication so a frozen screen or bad reception would not qualify as effective. Also, keep in mind that ASL is a 3D language not 2D and many subtle nuances in the language can be lost via video. If you have questions about VRI, call us! We can guide you and even provide VRI. If you have Deaf patients or clients ASK them their preference. They'll tell you what they feel is most effective for them.
