This is my last post as an employee of St. Edward's. Of all of the places that I have worked, BSS has been my favorite. I came to St. Ed’s in July 2008 after working at the Univ. of Texas. I was allowed to work part-time while performing my non-profit tasks. The Dean's Suite team members have changed over the years and we’ve all worked well together. Whomever they hire to replace me will be great, they maybe not as good looking as I am or have my evil laugh, but I know you will welcome that person with open arms. I will cherish my time with you. My days ahead will be spent with my husband, grandchild, and dog while I follow my artistic path.

Brian Smith, Associate Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science, spoke with Fox 7 about new laws taking effect in 2022.
What new Texas laws go in effect in 2022? While September ushered in some major legislation related to issues like abortion and guns, January’s set of laws will influence smaller demographics.

Alexis Reed (Sociology, '23) gave a keynote address at the recent "Power to the Power: Own Your Activism" event on campus. Alexis spoke about her own activism as a high school senior, when as the captain of her cheer team, she protested during the national anthem at every football game that year. Alexis was inspired by Colin Kapernick's protests against racial inequality and the oppression of people of color. Her experience with activism caught the attention of author and sports history journalist Dave Zirin, who interviewed Alexis and included her story in his latest book, The Kaepernick Effect. We are absolutely thrilled to have Alexis in our campus community. She is a wonderful example of a student who truly reflects the social justice mission of SEU. Please check out her interview on pages 55-61 of the book and her keynote address in the zoom link below (starts at 54:54)

“McConaughey isn’t running, but it’d have been a lot cooler if he did,” said Assoc. Dean of BSS and Political Science Prof. Brian Smith, quoting McConaughey’s character in the film "Dazed and Confused."
“It would have made the race very interesting. The good thing about elections is that there’s always another opportunity. For McConaughey, he would do better running in an open-seat election than against a well-known Democrat and an incumbent Republican,” Smith said.

In the News: Brian Smith
Brian Smith, Associate Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science, spoke with the Houston Chronicle about "one of the most intriguing political races of 2022: Attorney General Ken Paxton." This week, "lawmaker Matt Krause dropped out of the race and one of the most controversial members of Congress, Louie Gohmert, has joined the fray."
Gohmert's entry scrambles crowded race for Texas attorney general Gohmert, a nine-term Republican congressman from Tyler and member of the conservative...
