September is National Workforce Development Month! The National Center for STEM Education is built on the conviction that strengthening STEM teaching is critical to expanding opportunities for students and building the nation’s long-term STEM capacity.

As part of our work to connect research, practice, and partnership to address national workforce challenges, the National Center for STEM Education is excited to launch a new partnership with Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) and the The City University of New York (CUNY).

The three-year initiative, Building Onramps to STEM Teaching, is supported by a $2 million private foundation investment and will focus on recruiting STEM majors into teaching careers through targeted recruitment and innovative, low-barrier opportunities to explore the profession. This partnership aims to strengthen pathways into STEM teaching and help address persistent shortages of qualified middle and high school STEM educators.

The National Center for STEM Education may have a new name and an expanded mission, but its foundation was built through UTeach.

For nearly three decades, UTeach faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners have demonstrated what is possible when universities commit to preparing excellent STEM teachers. Each UTeach site has strengthened that work, adapting the model, creating new resources, sharing what it has learned, and responding to the needs of its community.

The Center is the next chapter of that shared work. UTeach remains an essential part of who we are and what we do.

To the people and programs that helped build this foundation: thank you. We are proud to continue this work with you.

We’re proud to announce the launch of the National Center for STEM Education at The University of Texas at Austin.

Building on three decades of leadership through the UTeach Institute, the National Center for STEM Education marks an exciting evolution in our work—and a broader, more connected approach to strengthening STEM teaching, learning, and workforce pathways across Texas and the nation.

The Center will bring together partners across education, industry, workforce, and community organizations to do the following:

• Strengthen STEM teacher recruitment, preparation, and retention
• Support current educators through professional learning and leadership development
• Advance research-informed STEM teaching and teacher preparation
• Help educators respond to developments such as artificial intelligence and data science
• Expand career-connected learning and pathways to STEM careers
• Translate research into practical tools, programs, and policy solutions

The national UTeach program expansion initiative and our professional learning programs will remain central to this work. Together, we will build on a proven foundation while expanding our capacity to meet the changing needs of students, educators, and the STEM workforce.

Education Clinical Professor Sumudu Lewis, director of the UTeach program, an education minor that prepares STEM majors for teaching careers, won the 2026 Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching at UMass Lowell.

What role do you think K–12 STEM education plays in preparing the next generation of STEM professionals?

This year, UTeach programs across the country graduated 592 new STEM teachers, bringing the total number of UTeach graduates to more than 10,000 educators nationwide.

By 2029, UTeach graduates are projected to teach more than 1 million STEM students annually.

When we talk about building the STEM workforce, we often focus on colleges, employers, and industry.

But every future engineer, scientist, healthcare professional, computer scientist, and mathematician needs that STEM curiosity that comes from an engaging STEM teacher.

Strong STEM teachers help students see themselves in STEM, build confidence in their abilities, and develop the skills needed to pursue future opportunities.
