Where will the next generation of the STEM workforce come from, given the industry's dramatic growth? In honor of National Workforce Development Month, Dr. Michael Marder argues that the answer is in our schools.

We are hurtling toward new revolutions driven by artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum computing, and other advances. Will the U.S. find itself among those driving the scientific and technological revolutions?

Strengthening STEM teacher recruitment, preparation, and retention is one of the pillars of our work at the National Center for STEM Education. It began with the UTeach STEM teacher preparation model over 25 years ago and continues to this day through that program and other higher education initiatives.

🏖️Summer fun in STEM Teaching 🏖️ Three UTeach South students put their STEM teaching skills into practice this summer on the Alabama coast, leading math and science activities for elementary students at the “Beach Brain” summer camp.

The students, all marine sciences majors at the University of South Alabama, helped young campers explore STEM through hands-on learning.

For senior marine sciences major Emma Pritchett, the experience was transformative, reaffirming her interest in pursuing a career in education. "[The camp] solidified my goals and my confidence that people need learning and need inquiry; they need hands-on instruction..." she says.

UTeach helps prepare teachers. They change the world. Across more than 50 university- based programs nationwide, UTeach students are building the skills to become STEM educators and share their passion for science in the classroom.

In June 2026 elementary students from Gulf Shores joined marine science majors at Beach Brain camp, learning math and science through fun, engaging activities.

Would you be surprised to learn that teaching pays—in salary, career opportunity, and impact?

Many prospective STEM teachers would be. And that misconception could mean missing out on a great career. That's why we're thrilled to announce that the National Center for STEM Education is the new home for the nationwide effort to “Get the Facts Out” about STEM teaching. Get the Facts Out (GFO), a research-based initiative devoted to repairing the reputation of the teaching profession.

Bringing GFO under the Center provides the national infrastructure needed to sustain and expand the initiative’s impact and help grow the talent pool of excellent STEM teachers nationwide. This transition marks an exciting new chapter in the shared mission to build capacity across U.S. institutions of higher education, K–12 school districts, and state departments of education to strengthen the recruitment and preparation of STEM teachers across the U.S.

As part of our work to connect research, practice, and partnership to address national workforce challenges, the National Center for STEM Education is excited to launch a new partnership with Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) and the The City University of New York (CUNY).

The three-year initiative, Building Onramps to STEM Teaching, is supported by a $2 million private foundation investment and will focus on recruiting STEM majors into teaching careers through targeted recruitment and innovative, low-barrier opportunities to explore the profession. This partnership aims to strengthen pathways into STEM teaching and help address persistent shortages of qualified middle and high school STEM educators.
