A Christ-centered PK-8th grade school that provides a feast of education to a diverse community.

OUR FOUNDING BELIEFS
City School opened its door in 2002 to be a place where children from throughout Austin could learn about God and His truth (all truth) side by side. Here children of painters and attorneys, contractors and professors learn to read and do math, write and draw. They play, pray, and sometimes quarrel – after which they learn to resolve conflict in a way that honors God and one a

There is something different about experiencing an idea rather than hearing it explained.

At Clockwise, participants will move through a Charlotte Mason school day guided by experienced teachers. We’ll spend our day reading, narrating, history, nature study, singing, handcrafts, and afternoon tea included.

Whether you’re a homeschool parent, teacher, or simply curious about a living education, this is an opportunity to experience it from the inside.

School is out, but these photos are still living rent free in our heads.

During the last couple weeks of school, we handed our older students disposable cameras and let them capture their days through their own eyes.

We loved this project so much, and we hope these photos give you a little glimpse into their perspectives, personalities, friendships, and the small moments that made up this year.

Starting with 5th grade, enjoy!

They were once 5 years old, starting school and now they are embarking on high school.

As they continue growing taller and older, we desire that they would speak to themselves with courage, perseverance, and hope.

Over the years, there have been hard lessons, long days, new friendships, failures, victories, prayers, and quiet moments of wrestling. In each of these past and soon to be future moments, the voice you listen to matters.

So we remind them again before they leave these halls:

Speak kindly to yourself.
Encourage yourself.
Remember what is true.
Remember the God who walks with you.
Remember that growth takes time.
Remember that you can do hard things.

Watching these students hold their five-year-old selves in their hands feels a little like watching time fold together at once, the child they were and the young adults they are becoming.

Both are worth celebrating.

We see and appreciate the mothers who make City School what it is.

Behind every classroom celebration, field trip, Thanksgiving Feast, warm welcome, covered lunch duty, whispered prayer, beautifully cared-for space, and so many unseen details… there is a mother caring deeply for this school community.

From serving in classrooms to multiple Signup Genius sign-ups each year, our moms organize events, answer school emails, step in to sub, or faithfully pray over our school. Each day, our mothers trust City School with the care of their children. Every expression of that love and trust shapes the culture of our school.

Children grow differently when they are surrounded by mothers who care deeply about the places helping shape them.

We want to say we see you, we love you and are grateful for you. Happy Mother’s Day.

This year’s middle school Shakespeare production was A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It ended in a room so full there was hardly space to stand, which meant a lot to our students. There was awe at their performances and laughter at their antics.

At the very end, as Puck stepped forward for his final monologue, those of us in the back got to witness alumni friends whispering Puck’s monologue together.

Not for performance. But for a shared moment. The nudges and the smiles as they brought back their own middle school memories.

A shared moment of remembrance.

What a gift to witness it. Not just what was performed and the hard work these student’s accomplished but also the lasting impact this has on our students.

Recently our kinder class studied the life cycle of butterflies. For weeks, they watched it all unfold from itty bitty caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.

Along the way, they noticed something true about butterflies that is also true about themselves:
when a butterfly first emerges, it has to struggle.

Its wings have to press, beat and stretch. This workout is what makes them strong enough to fly.

“Hard things make us stronger.”

There’s a reason these lessons stick.
Research in educational psychology shows that children understand and retain more when they can see and experience something, not just read about it.
A life cycle in a book can inform them. But a life cycle in their hands? It stays with them.

In a world that’s quickly turning to convenience, shortcuts, and even AI to do the heavy lifting, this is the kind of learning that can’t be outsourced.

To watch.
To wonder.
To wrestle with what’s hard.
To grow not just in knowledge, but in patience, empathy, and creativity.

This is a group of kindergarteners, standing in the sun, releasing butterflies and learning about their own strength.
