Our Summer Teen Portfolio Program was so much fun, with such great results, that we’ve decided to do it year-round! Starting in September, students will have the opportunity to explore one, some, or all of our 6 week modules specially designed to give their portfolios the edge they need for college applications.

SESSION I: CAST DRAWING & COMPARATIVE SIGHTING

Sep 20- Oct 25 | Sundays | 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Master the core mechanics of traditional observational accuracy. Students learn comparative measurement, plumb lines, and light logic while working directly from 3D plaster casts. Outcome: One master cast drawing and comparative construction process pages.

Jeff Markowsky is back!

Mr. Plein Air Nomad himself is back in Austin and has a class starting September 12! Snag your spot today and head outside with purpose 🌿🎨☀️

This course takes us outdoors to study natural light where we will put emphasis on the importance of the initial abstract design, seeing the dominant shapes in a painting before paint is even applied to the canvas.

Woohoo! Fall means the return to our beloved 6 week format for short term classes- starting with Karen Offutt’s Essentials of Figure Painting!

Get the painting instruction you’ve been seeking with absolute all-star Karen Woolley Offutt. The goal is to achieve a 3 dimensional likeness with a simple block-in of the larger shapes and then to build on that by carving out the smaller shapes. Along the way she will discuss, in more detail, the use of value, color, and temperature as well as how to adjust edges to create a sense of atmosphere within the painting.

Instructor Nathan Seay

In this class, you will work on fundamental drawing concepts through applying them to plaster replicas of Greek and Roman sculptures, the same ones that artists have drawn and painted from for centuries. Students will learn how to articulate form in space — that is take the three -dimensional cast and learn how to construct it in two-dimensions on paper through studying geometric form, light and shadow, contour.

We use similar tools and methods that were taught in the 19th century at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where many who became master painters studied. This is a great class with which to learn the basics of drawing which can be applied to anything.

Nate Seay, one of our esteemed Academy instructors, is teaching the class. He has helped develop our drawing program at the Academy and is a beloved instructor for his way of combining his deep knowledge with clever visualizations that are both entertaining as well as intellectually stimulating.

What a weekend! Jennifer Balkan blew us all away with her eye opening Harmonious Color in Figure Painting workshop. Touching on everything from color theory and paint mixing, to setting up a scene with your model and translating that into a strong composition, as well as top notch drawing and painting guidance, Jennifer really went above and beyond. Whew!
