Happy Father’s Day!
I wanted to share a few titles that celebrate Dads but also different family structures.
I will love you is a beautiful story of the love between a mother and daughter. It appears as if the mother is a single mother in the story. It also features a mother and daughter who have differing skin colors. The story never addresses their skin color or family structure but simply their love. I sent this story to my own mother for Mother’s Day.
Where are you from? Celebrates the story of ancestry but also the relationship between grandfather and grandchild. Many children in our classroom spend time in multigenerational homes. It’s so important to honor and celebrate those relationships.
Harriet gets carried away is the story of a little girl with a vivid imagination. She also happens to have two dads. I love this story because it features a two dad family without centering the story around their relationship. Harriet has two dads. She also has a penguin costume. It’s beautiful.
Last is Welcome to the party! I’ve showcased this book by before but i just love seeing Black families just being a Black family.
