This magical place built networks, friendships and community. It introduced children to gardening, environmentalism, healthy eating, and gave them a chance to be outside as recess was slowly taken away. It shared food and knowledge grown together with Becker’s students, teachers, the neighborhood, COA Earth Camp, Title 1 fifth graders across AISD, and so many others. It received awards locally, regionally and nationally. A place to come to get your hands dirty, meditate, and seek solace from nature in the center of the city, and so much more. Join us to celebrate all the beautiful memories made at the Becker Green Classroom over the years and give this piece of Mother Earth the goodbye she deserves. What does the Becker Green Classroom mean to you?

That’s not AI! AMWAY gave The Green Classroom a salute in the education section of Newsweek back in the early 90’s. Carla Marshall wrote grants, sent announcements, and entered contests to fund the program and bring national attention to what she was accomplishing at the first, and now oldest, school garden in AISD. Today we continue to seek grants, donations, sponsors, and volunteers for everything we do so AISD isn’t burdened with the cost.
BTW, does anyone know the student featured in the photo? We would love to know their story and how Becker’s Green Classroom influenced their life.

The oldest school garden in AISD! Started by Carla Marshall in 1989. Even then, AISD didn’t have the funding to hire teachers. She volunteered her time, money, and resources to teach and build the garden from scratch. She invited friends, neighbors, parents and others to help and in doing so built one of the most intentional communities I’ve been a part of. To this day the Becker Green Classroom is run by parent and community volunteers who donate their time, money, and resources to fundraise, plan, and continue Carla’s dream to weave gardening and environmental education with academic excellence in math, science, social studies, language, art , and music for all elementary students
