CDF Freedom Schools® is a six-week reading enrichment program designed to combat summer learning loss among children from families with low resources.

Freedom Schools® was designed and is coordinated by the Children’s Defense Fund. It was patterned after Freedom Summer 1966, when college students went down from the north to the south to help teach African-Americans to read (to pass those bogus "literacy tests"). Our esteemed founder, Marian Wright Edelman, had the vision to apply this formula to help children and youth get fired up for literature.

Be part of a one-day book drive to help Welcome Table share the gift of reading.

A good book is a gift for all ages. In December, Welcome Table will host a book giveaway for the families who participate in our Neighbor 2 Neighbor and Freedom Schools programs. You can help by sharing new and gently used books that have inspired you. Books for teens/adults and books in Spanish are especially helpful. Bring them to church on Nov 20 to donate to our big Little Free Library. November 20 is THE DAY to bring books to St. James' Episcopal Church.

See how fun it is to be a Read Aloud guest? The scholars love meeting and hearing a variety of readers--it'll be no different wanting to hear readers during our virtual Freedom School this summer.
