At Life Ki-do Martial Arts Austin, we strengthen our students inside and out. Through our Tools for Life social emotional learning system, our students develop focus & mindfulness, confidence, resilience, and social intelligence (empathy, compassion and kindness). This means Life Ki-do students learn to trust their inner natural strength and abilities while also learning to work together respectfu

lly. They go into the world confidently, looking to their inner guide, rather than peers and outside influences, for validation and motivation. Through our unique blend of martial arts, our students also develop a strong, safe body while learning how to breathe, relax and flow on and off the mats.

Grasping Sparrow’s Tail is one of the foundational sequences in Tai Chi and a great way to explore four of its primary energies: Ward Off, Roll Back, Press, and Push.

Rather than moving mainly from the arms, the practice is about learning to move from the center—the Dantian—while staying connected, relaxed, and aware of your partner.

Here’s a breakdown of this section from the Yang-style Tai Chi 24 Form.

Meet Arjun — our Power Ninja Student of the Month. And a self-described "little Sensei kid teacher." 🏆💛

We cannot get over this young ninja and everything he brings to our mat at Life Ki-do in Westlake.

When we asked Arjun what the most important lessons he has learned at Life Ki-do are, he gave us the most perfectly enthusiastic answer: the cool tricks. Frog jumps. Jumping jacks. Squats. He has been mastering them all — and the joy and pride he brings to every single one of them is absolutely contagious.

But here is what makes Arjun extra special. His favorite things about Life Ki-do are helping new friends and practicing his breathing. At his age. Already looking out for the kids just joining. Already connecting his breath to how he feels and how he shows up.

And he calls himself a little Sensei kid teacher. Honestly Arjun — you are. 🥋

The hard work, the heart, and the way he shows up for himself and the people around him every single class is something our whole team notices and cherishes. We are so proud of this young ninja and so grateful he is part of our Life Ki-do family.

Congratulations Arjun! 🙏

This review made our whole team smile — especially that one detail. 💛

A 4-year-old who talks about his classes all week long. That alone is something. But the part that really got us? He is using what he learns at Life Ki-do at home.

That is not an accident. That is the whole point.

At Life Ki-do we are not just teaching martial arts. We are teaching life skills — the kind that do not stay on the mat. The kind that show up at the dinner table, on the playground, and in the quiet moments when a child chooses kindness or self-control because they genuinely understand why it matters.

When a parent tells us their child is bringing these lessons home, that is the biggest compliment we could ever receive. It means something real is happening — not just in class, but inside the child.

To this family, thank you for sharing this. And to that little 4-year-old who is already living his Life Ki-do lessons at home — we are so proud of you. 🙏

Free trial class available for children ages 3 and up across Westlake Hills, Rollingwood, Barton Creek, and Austin TX.

Here is something the hack culture of social media does not want you to hear. 💡

Being bad at something is not a problem to fix. It is the beginning of something really important.

Sensei Jonathan makes a point in this clip that cuts right through the noise of quick tips, shortcuts, and life hacks — all of that pressure to get good fast actually creates extra physical, mental, and emotional tension that interferes with the very thing we are trying to learn. And worse, it robs us of the journey where the real growth happens. The resilience. The grit. The confidence that only comes from working through the hard parts with an open mind and a willingness to not know.

Full video and blog coming soon — stay tuned. 🎥

Drop a 💡 in the comments if you have ever felt the pressure to get good at something faster than felt natural!

Something special is happening at our new South Austin Dojo — and we could not be more proud. 🥋💛

Introducing our Samurai Intermediate class — a brand new program designed specifically for our 2nd through 5th grade students who have been training with Life Ki-do for a while and are ready for the next level of challenge.

The big addition? Sparring.

For students who have built a solid foundation of skills, focus, and self-control, sparring is one of the most exciting and rewarding next steps in their martial arts journey. It develops presence, timing, confidence under pressure, and the ability to think and move at the same time — skills that go far beyond the mat.

Watching these kids step into this new challenge in our beautiful new South Austin Dojo fills our team with so much pride. They have worked hard to get here. They have earned this. And having a dedicated space in South Austin where this kind of advanced training can happen is something we have been looking forward to for a long time.

To every Samurai Intermediate student — we see your growth, we honor your effort, and we cannot wait to watch you keep rising. 🙏

Meet Elliott — our Samurai Program Student of the Month. 🏆💛

When we asked Elliott what the most important lesson he has learned at Life Ki-do is, he said something so sweet - Getting to see his friends and family grow.

That answer tells us everything about who Elliott is — a young person who shows up not just for himself but for the people around him. Who finds meaning not in his own progress alone but in watching the people he loves become more capable, more confident, and more themselves.

And when we asked his favorite thing about training here? No matter what, his friends are there for him.

That is the Life Ki-do community in one sentence. A place where children do not just train alongside each other — they genuinely show up for each other. Through the hard classes and the easy ones. Through the belt tests and the off days. Through all of it.

Elliott is a shining example of everything this community is built to develop — not just a skilled martial artist but a genuinely caring, connected human being. We are so proud of him. 🙏

Every relationship problem we have ever had starts in the same place. Inside us. 💛

That is not a criticism. It is actually the most hopeful thing Sensei Jonathan says in last Thursday's full video — because if the root of our relationship challenges is inside us, then so is the solution.

It is so easy to get caught up in what someone else is doing or not doing. What they said. How they made us feel. And before we know it we are coming from fear, insecurity, jealousy, or the need to control — and calling it love.

But Jonathan points to something deeper. Underneath all the messy human stuff — the thoughts, the fears, the insecurities — there is also something else. A depth of love, awareness, and consciousness. A capacity for genuine beauty in how we experience and relate to other people. That place in us is real. And the more we learn to live from it, the more our relationships transform.

If you missed Thursday's full video on relationships, the My Shoes Your Shoes Our Shoes framework, and how martial arts develops genuine social and emotional intelligence, this is your reminder to go back and watch.

Every tool in this graphic is something we teach on the mat at Life Ki-do every single week. 💛📖

And now every parent has access to them — whether their child trains with us or not.

The updated 2026 edition of Life Ki-do Parenting by Sensei Jonathan Hewitt takes the same Tools for Life we use in every class and puts them into a warm, practical parenting context that any family can pick up and use today.

Here is what is inside:

🌊 River Check-In — a simple tool for focus, mindfulness, and self-regulation that helps children understand what state they are in and how to shift it
💪 River Effort — builds genuine confidence and a strong sense of self through consistent personal best effort rather than comparison or competition
🎯 A-B Formula — develops resilience and goal setting so children learn to move through challenges rather than around them
👟 My Shoes, Your Shoes, Our Shoes — grows social intelligence, empathy, and the ability to show up well in every relationship

These are not theories. They are tools that have been tested and refined over 30 years of working with thousands of children, teenagers, and adults at Life Ki-do in Austin. And they work just as powerfully at home as they do on the mat.

The updated edition is available now on Amazon. It is the perfect companion for any Life Ki-do family — and a genuinely useful resource for any parent who wants to give their child a real inner toolkit for life.

You already have everything you need. It is already there. 💛

That is the heart of what Sensei Jonathan shares in this clip — and it is one of the most quietly powerful ideas we return to again and again at Life Ki-do.

The inner spark. The deepest place in each of us. The calm, caring, loving presence that was never broken and never needs to be earned from anyone else. We do not have to create it or find it in someone else or wait until we are worthy of it. We just need to learn to be aware of it, connect to it, and try to live from it.

And when we do — even a little — everything shifts. The messy stuff inside us — the thoughts, the emotions, the feelings that get tangled and complicated — becomes something we can meet with awareness and understanding rather than something that runs us.

That is the foundation of a healthy relationship with yourself. And from that foundation, every other relationship in your life becomes possible in a whole new way.

**Repulse the Monkey** was one of the harder Tai Chi movements for me to understand.

What helped was making the martial application a little bigger at first so I could feel the movement and the intention of the movement.

Rather than creating force through muscular tension, I began to feel how the turn of the Dantian, the backward step, shifting body weight, and sinking through the body could move the arms naturally.

Sometimes understanding the bigger movement helps us discover the softness and efficiency inside it.
