🦖 HAPPY DINOSAUR DAY! 🌿✨
Did you know Austin was once covered by an ancient sea filled with giant prehistoric creatures?
One of the most incredible fossils discovered right here in Central Texas is the Onion Creek Mosasaur — a massive marine reptile that swam through the waters covering Austin nearly 95 million years ago. 🌊
Despite looking like a dinosaur, mosasaurs were actually giant sea reptiles related more closely to modern lizards and snakes. Some could grow over 30 feet long and ruled the oceans during the Late Cretaceous period. 🦴
Fossils from the Onion Creek area can even be seen today at the Texas Science & Natural History Museum on the UT campus!
Austin may be known for music and tacos… but apparently we also had sea monsters. 😂
