whether you’re an independent artist or you’re running a label, you know that every dollar counts
Independent artists are spending anywhere from zero to 5000 $ on a music video that doesn’t convert to stream or dollars in their pocket
Labels are spending anywhere from $5000-$100,000 on a music video plus $10,000 for a music shoot
And neither of them have a system for telling what songs are actually going to be profitable
It’s all just a guess or a gut instinct
And guess what y’all? Got instincts are wrong all the time.
And you might love your next new single
But you’ve catalogue songs that could be making you money and you’re choosing not to
I don’t know about you, but I really like having food on the table
And making a living from my art is also really fun
Data > gut feeling
So the next skill to learn is how to track the data and what data to actually look for
So that you know exactly what strategy to implement
And where to put your money in a place that it will actually return to you, and you can keep making a living from your art
So learn it yourself
Or you could just hire my team to do that for you 😉

Success starts when you shift from this mindset
“I have to do marketing”
To this mindset
“I get to bring this song to the people who need it”
It’s simple.
If you’re music is good, then somewhere out there someone needs it
And if it’s not good yet, go keep making better music.
Simple.
The line is very fine
Yes tell your story
Yes build a world
Yes connect as a human to the humans on the other side of the screen
But in the end, the audience needs to fall in love with the music
The problem is, how do you get an audience to care about the music?
Because they don’t innately on social media
Simple marketing technique : building Know, Like, and Trust
Your catalog is more important than your favorite new song
And I’m so not sorry to say it
To make money in this industry you gotta play the long game + sustainability game
It’s not about one song
It’s how all parts fit together
And this oisses a lot of artists off
But you might think this next song is a hit
And if the audience doesn’t like it then they just don’t like it
Your art is for you
But as soon as you enter the game of business it’s for the audience
That’s just how business works
Marketing is all about satisfying and audience’s needs
Even in the music industry
It’s never an accident
And it’s not about being an Industry Plant either
Artist, who understand the needs of the people and create art to support the needs of the people will succeed
Artists who ignore the needs of the people and decide they want to create their own world might succeed, but it might take more time or it might happen after their lifetime
It just depends on where the demand is
And this is just business
Music solves a problem
Bad days boring car drives getting ready to go out
These are all real life moments that music create a solution for
The problem most artists have is they’re just trying to sell the song
And so the marketing doesn’t connect to the people
Even if the song would
The key to a really great marketing?
Show how your song solves the problem
Sell thr EMOTION
It’s not “this song is out”
It’s “I made this song for the grief you feel when you pass their house on your way home from work”
Get it?
This drives to REAL people
Who are going through REAL emotions
And use your music to process them
And makes you worthy of a cult following
The more you grow, the more hate you’ll feel
This isn’t new. This is the downside of fame.
And we live in a day in age where anyone can become “social media famous”
Which means if you plan on building an audience for your music or your mind or anything in between
You will have three types of audience member members. People who wanna be like you, people who wanna date you, or people who wanna hate you.
There will be times when you’ll receive so much hate on a post that your heart will constrict, and you will want to curl into a ball
The key is to learn how to feel safe to be seen putting yourself out there
To create a vision that’s so strong it out screams the negative comments
I face this too, just like you
And remember if you’re building an artist project, this does come with a territory
You asked for an audience so have gratitude that it’s there
And trust that if you’re pushing away, the people that aren’t meant for you
Then you’re attracting the people who aren’t meant for you
Music is the medicine audience marketing is the science.
Marketing is 80% data and 20% creativity
And 100% empathy
Understanding what’s happening in the audience‘s life
And the problem, your music solves for that audience
Once you get that your incredibly powerful
Because not only are you creating something that controls the nervous system system of the audience?
But you’ve mastered how to appeal to that nervous system system
Combined, it is an absolute force of nature
And that’s why the privileged view want to control it so much
it’s not just about the money
It’s about the audience
Control the music influence the audience
Influence the audience, control the money
you are powerful don’t let the starving Artist mindset make you forget that
The music industry tends to skip this step
Which is odd because every other industry does this
But it makes sense since things moved to short form over the past four years
In order to get more bang for your buck in your marketing strategy
The key is to have a process for testing
Kind of like a process of elimination
I actually saw this on Shark Tank
A woman grew an online clothing store to $1 million per month
she did this very strategically by asking her audience
She’d post in her Instagram stories. Do you want this dress in red or blue?
And then people would answer and she would get that dress in stock
And then she’d sell out
This is absolutely brilliant and most artists aren’t doing this
Ask your audience.
Sure, follow your creative inspiration, of course
but if you can also learn how to focus group your audience, you will find success, way, faster and way cheaper than everyone else around you
Of course your music has to be really good first.
So if it’s not radio ready, start there.
If you’re great in live shows but your content doesn’t have the same energy
It’s actually pretty simple
steal this tactic from stand-up comics
Your content should be the moments between the songs
Not the songs themselves
The moments between the songs are where you’re interacting with the audience telling stories connecting with the humans
It shows what the full experience will be
This is going to draw new people into your world and your page
And show them what you’re all about
Then your other content format should be songs specific
BTW, text on screen drives a strategy a ton
So get really good at that too.
