When you corner someone about their addiction, you trigger their "defense mode." They don't hear your love; they hear an attack. They stop listening and start justifying, turning you into the enemy instead of the ally they desperately need.
Stop being a judge and start being a curious partner.
Instead of "You have a problem," try asking:
"What does drinking give you that nothing else does?"
* "How do you feel the morning after?"
* "What are you afraid would happen if you stopped?"
Addiction is rarely about the substance—it’s about numbing a pain that feels too big to face. They aren't lacking willpower; they are paralyzed by what they’re running from.
If you want to help them get sober, you have to help them feel safe enough to face the "why" behind the "what."
